3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ibrew2or3 (4914) - Phoenix, USA - MAR 8, 2007
Sampled at the O-Town throwdown thanks to Crizay. Dark pour with light brown head. Black patent burnt malt aroma with malted milk shake and kind of vanilla notes. The flavor doesn’t divulge its imperial nature. Seems awfully drinkable. Burnt malts start things off with malts sweetness close behind. The finish is pure burnt even charred malts.

Light chocolate aroma. Black body with a thin head. Medium palate. Flavor is chocolate malt with a dose of bitterness as well. Enjoyable.

C-Bus 7 Bottle shared by crizay: Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma, some chocolate, and roasted malts, dry and earthy. Flavor, smooth roasted malts, coffee, and some chocolate. Some roasted bitterness. Solid.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 boboski (1095) - Alabama, USA - MAR 21, 2007
Oily black pour, thin looking body. Light brown head has well retained compacted bubbles. Aroma is a good balance of chocolate and roastiness, some coffee. Further nosing indicates more chocolate than roasted malts, minute hoppiness and off smells of acrid smoke and pineapple. Flavor is not very good, unbalanced and unexpected. Coffee grounds are dominant now, grainy to a point of annoyance. Too much bitterness in the finish is not akin to a fresh, highly hopped imperial stout of recollection, but rather a poor malt extraction. Thin mouthfeel doesn’t help this beers’ cause. A phenolic, cluttered oddity.

Thanx to Crizay for sending this down for the O Town throwdown.the nose on this was that hoppy dirt aroma.I am not sure I detected the bologna Fantomas was raving about.I sniffed this several times and told him I didn’t get that.Lots of hops and coffee with slight chocolate.Easy drinking not too heavy.

Smells like ring bologna. If you don’t believe me, buy some. Smell it. No doubt, though, that it’s the hops giving it that smoky paprika aroma. Stark imbalance between the hops and the malts with the former dominating the later. Whatever roasted coffee, chocolate flavor is here is playing second fiddle. Tastes more like a dark DIPA. But the bitterness does play well with its supporting cast.

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2007 Thanks to Crizay for shipping this to Dragonstout for the O-Town Throw Down. The body is deep black and holds a finger sized, compact tan head which is lasting. The aroma is massive coffee and cream with chocolate and fudge brownie notes. It isn’t very Imperial in the burnt/roasted malt parts of the aroma and actually smells a bit like an amped up sweet stout. Smells very good though. Fore is again chocolate, coffee, cream with some vanilla, esspresso, fudge and a very silky mouthfeel that makes me suspect it may have a little oatmeal in it. The finish gets much more roasty and bitter than the aroma or fist sip would indicate. Finishes quite nicely.

Bottle... O-Town Throwdown... This beer rocks!... Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. Chocolate and big-time coffee in the aroma. Some oxidation in the flavor, but mainly sweet chocolate and burnt, bitter coffee grounds. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and feather-soft carbonation. Finishes chocolaty sweet, then charred and bitter. Thanks to crizay for shipping this world class brew down for The Throwdown!
