4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 14, 2010 Wow, BrewWharf does it again! Opaque black colour, great lacing, head colour is chocolate brown, some great hoppage on the nose, high ebc, a great balance, good bitterness, lingers in the mouth, dry medium finish, excellent drinkability, just a fantastic black death IPA. The style is reminiscent of the great Czech dark lagers, which is high praise. Chocolate, nutty texture and some cold espresso coffee and vanilla. WOW. Really love this. Iíve changed my mind. This and Hopfather are equal. Thanks to Phil for the generous pint. Edit. Thanks to discussion and confusion by myself.

A Mes rate. Cask at Brew Wharf.
Black body with a good tan head. Aroma is very resinous and citric and lemony. A little too much to be honest and not enough malt showing through. Very soapy in the mouth. Nice and bitter in the finish. Pleasantly dry leading to a fruity aftertaste. Decent enough but promises a lot and delivers only a little.

Tap at the Brew Wharf. Pours hazy brown with a bubbly, filmy tan head. Holds a rich hop aroma with light caramel. Flavor is semi-sweet with pronounced, earthy bitterness. You can almost taste the whole flower hops. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a sticky, piney and resiny body. Finishes sweet and bitter, with some just perceptible roasted barley. Very good.

@ brewpub. Pretty much opaque brown. Pretty color, low carbonation, cask suds. Balanced aroma. Juicy dark malts with American hops ahead. Rogue-ish in character. Quaffable English cask mouthfeel. Has a lovely hop flower character mixed with lovely roast. Then some acidity in finish. Nice character, pretty yummy.

Cloudy dark brown. Woody, slightly citrusy American hop aroma. Chocolate, toast character. Nice flavour and balance, with a nice citrusy hop finish.

On draught at Brew Wharf. Dark brown pour with a beige head. Good hoppy nose with raisins, chocolate, herbs and coffee getting in on the act too . Smoky, dry flavours with a hint of chocolate and coffee. Soft hop presence easing itís way through. Dry, hoppy bite in the finish. Went down very nicely.

Tap at BrewWharf. Well.. itís black. And itís hoppy. Superb hop aroma. Has quite the body to it, a slight astringency that I suppose comes from the darker malts. Unfortunately a styie that I havenít sampled alot, but by the looks (and taste) of it, I might have a new favorite style! Superb job guys!
Oh, and my first thought too was that the name was a take on Black Ops, it isnít. Think oxymoron..

[tap at Brew Wharf, London] Pours totally black, like a thin porter. Minimal head, just a thin coating of beige-hued bubbles. Aroma is sweet malt, chocolate, some hops. Tastes like a porter/doppelbock cross to me. Some hops at first but then all roasty malt. Extremely drinkable, does not taste 6.8% until halfway down when the punch hits. Nice dry finish with some roast coffee Ė great stuff. I didnít get the black Ďops thing either, by the wayÖ

Cask conditioned handpump Brew Wharf Borough Market. A black beer with an off-white bubbly head. A really good hoppy beer. Lovely citrussy fruits in the nose with the Centennial doing its thing with some good orangey notes. Full bodied hoppy taste with subliminal(?) roastiness and sweetness. Served too cold which is a problem at the Wharf but tasty no doubt.

Cask (handpump) at the Brew Wharf on 17 August 2010. Oh yes, this hit the spot. Rich, dark brown colour. Powerful hops. Whatever Phil might say, I did find a bit of chocolate here and, although roast character was minimal there did seem to be more body than a "normal" IPA without suffering from the sticky, sweet hop resins that can sometimes be a problem for me. Good rendition. I see Iíve marked it higher than the 21st Amendment Back in Black which was, presumably, an inspiration of sorts. Keep it up chaps. And, unlike Ken, I didnít work out the name because I didnít know what Black Ops were until I looked it up.

On tap at Brew Wharf, London on 16th August 2010. EXQUISITE! Dark brown with grey head. Full of burnt, roast malts. Smoke and fresh-ground coffee. Lingering whole-mouth bitterness and a smooth, textured mouthfeel.
