Weird one... Sample pour of deep golden amber. Nose is malty sweet, no citrus, some herbal... Flavor is sweet malt, some light citrus, herbal and sweet. Light and drinkable, just not a favorite..

Bottle. Almost no head but no floaties compared with the Flyng Dog version. Even better aroma. Some toasted malt is detectable. Citrusy, minty and floral, with elderberry championing the citrus, an alpine herbal feel, rosemary and juniper, and berry-like undertones. The taste is significantly better than the FD version yet still rather amateurish. This beer has also an evidently alcoholic mouthfeel, albeit less than the FD version. The anise-like finish is better, the taste more aromatic and the whole is better balanced. Still, it basically fails as an IPA and fails even more as a gruit which both beers actually are. The whole experiment was a challange to my wallet and my palate was not impressed. The philosophy of overloading a beer with a ton of hops and seeing what comes out does not work well when transposed on a gruit.

1.6 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 Abrakarl (96) - SWEDEN - JAN 18, 2013
Odd, spicy aroma. Can’t place the spice though. Not totally positive. No hops really which is negative. Will not have this again. It’s strong but not good. A waste of time and money and brain cells, although I applaud them for trying something different.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 EdKing (1299) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 4, 2013
Bottle from Kris Wines. Colour is bright chestnut/copper brown, white head. Lots of bubbles and carbonation in the glass, although less so on the taste. Nose is spicy. It’s like sarsaparilla or Vimto. Fruity and spicy. There’s cinnamon, ginger, juniper, clove, Coca-cola caramel. This is how I would expect an ale to taste before they used hops. It works pretty well.
