A fury of dots and dashes come trough the receiver. The translator turns in amazement. "A Zero IBU IPA by two breweries separated by sea?" His commanding officer lays a grizzled hand on his shoulder as his eyes narrow toward the horizon. "No bastard ever won a war by playing it safe, son."
The International Arms Race is a new type of battle collaboration between hardcore American craft brewery Flying Dog and BrewDog.
’Zero IBU IPA’ is an ale brewed with berries and herbs.

Bouteille 33cl, batch#164, BB 23/05/2013.

Bottle from a PUB’R secret operative. Pours headless coppery with nose of sprucey hops, pine, vinyl, mild caramel. Tastes very sprucey, very unique, with caramel malt, hops, and a liquid band-aid flavor late. This one is a novel experiment, but not a good beer. This one blows worse than a new wife.

THOUGHTS: Wow. All spices and herbs. It smelled and tasted like a crazy Ricola. It actually reminded me of the recreations of ancient Scottish ales. Very interesting beer, but awful IPA. Slightly like a sahti, too. TECHNICAL: Drank 3/3/2013. Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy, medium to dark amber with an average, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma contained. light caramel; hints of chocolate; Ricola; cola; flowers; herbs; spices; and some fruit. The flavor was a little watered down. The initial flavor and finish were moderately sweet and lightly bitter. There was herbal tea, ancient ales, cola, hints of chocolate, fruit, herbs and spices, and caramel. The medium body was a little syrupy with fizzy carbonation and a dry finish.

First off, bull crap on the IPA part. That’s just stupid, because it’s nothing like an IPA. It smells like roses, hibiscus, and lavender. The flavor isn’t has offensive, but really, it’s not good.

Pours a cloudy light tan. Sort of iced tea. Aroma of ginger and berries. Taste is sweet with a touch of grape. The bitterness seems to come from the ginger. Crisp clean finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma - has eucalyptus, floral/medicinal herbs, some honey notes, and spices that are confusing. Appearance - body color is an orange amber; the liquid is slightly hazed with decent nucleation; off-white head sets up at about 1/2" and quickly subsides into a ring, and eventually totally dies out. Taste - initial flavor is Ricola cough drop, with a little eucalyptus. There are other confusing spices - it seems to be a compilation of things like elderberries, honey, sage, coriander, and just bizarre combinations. Nice for an incense, not for a beer. Unpleasant. Palate - body is light; texture thin; the carbonation is average; the finish is herbaceous and medicinal mostly eucalyptus ~ not a fan. Label says a "Zero IBU IPA" ~ it’s a S/H/V no doubt, nothing about this remotely touches on anything IPA. It has no re-purchase factor to me at all. I got duped. Sucks out loud!

Very slightly hazy bronze and copper coloured body with almost no head at all - a few large bubbles on top. Aroma of pine, spruce, juniper berries, figs and hints of sage - very interesting. Medium-bodied; Assertive herbal and very aggresively showing sage and rosemary with a little alcohol and medicinal tastes coming through at the end. Aftertaste shows much more restraint than flying dog’s version, but still a very herbal and woodsy flavour that is a pure gruit. Overall, not a very good beer, period. Tasting this horizontally, I prefered this version over the American Flying Dog’s version, since this is a bit more herbal and showing some less aggressive flavours making it more of a natural flavour instead of being forced. Regardless, this isn’t a great beer and isn’t worth finding or trying at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle adjacent to the American (Flying Dog) version of this beer on 23-March-2014 at home in Washington with this specific 33 cL bottle purchased at Half Time in Poughkeepsie, New York on 26-December-2012 for US$4.99 (Batch #164, best before 23-May-2013).
