Holy cow! This beer was described as "a crazy powerful stout." It did not fail the hype. The alcohol is heavy, prominent and extreme. This beer has so much going on with it, it’s difficult to pinpoint one particular flavor that you can focus on. My wife described this beer as tasting like prune juice, gasoline and barbeque sauce. While all off those flavors are there, with age they most likely will settle down and create a very subtle compete bodied stout with an extreme alcohol content.

Bottle from Erzbierschof’s advent calendar. What a great, great craft! Aroma of strong coffee, dark chocolate, ripe dark fruits, some alcohol, some vanilla, in a beautiful balance. Intense taste, bitter and sweet and roasted and creamy and softly carbonated and balanced and strong and beautiful. Long boozy warmy palate, intense dark chocolate and coffee and nuts. Outstanding flavour mix and balanced, very strong yet still not overdone. One of the best beers I ever had.

A slightly better version of Tokyo*. I must admit I’m having some trouble identifying exactly what Nøgne Ø and Mikkeller brougth to the table on this one but I like it. Pitch black, aroma of dark roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, soy. The dark malt and chocolate exists heavy in the taste as well, but with the cranberries from the Tokyo* less dominant. A bit too much alcohol in the finish, but it does bring a nice, warming sensation. Excellent Imperial Stout!

(Bottle) Black colour with brief, brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of strong black coffee, liquorice, dark chocolate, cacao, a touch of soy sauce and prunes. Malty, roasted taste with strong sweet espresso, liquorice, soy sauce, cacao, caramel, burnt sugar, a touch of anise, some pine needles and a generous roasty coffee bitterness in a vinous finish. Full body, fairly sweet. Loads of liquorice and strong black coffee. Quite powerful and vinous, still in surprisingly good balance. Excellent beer.

Bouteille 33cl, BB 20.07.21, batch# 057.

Bottle, dated 03-05-13. 15.2%. Appearance- unsurprisingly, this is pitch black. A half-finger brown head appears but doesn’t last long, leaving a few bubbles around the edge. Aroma- tons of it- dark chocolate, coffee, leather, tar, freshly laid road, whiskey, tiramisu, boozy dark fruit, burnt charred malt, vanilla, liqueur chocolate, oak, port wine, boozy Christmas cake. Smells massive. Taste- huge boozy sweetness dominates. Roast malt, bitter espresso coffee, burnt toast, smoky malt, treacle toffee, burnt cake mixture, spiced rum, whiskey fudge, dark rum, massive vanilla sweetness comes through towards the end. Sweet syrupy finish, clingy syrupy mouthfeel. Impressive stuff, although the balance is very much on the sweet side...

(BrewDog / Nøgne Ø / Mikkeller Black Tokyo* Horizon) Bottle 330 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 15.2% on my bottle, batch 102. Pours totally black, with half a finger of dark brown head on top, good density and retention. Aroma of light roasted malts, liquorice, alcohol, cheesy notes or dampness, faint vanilla. Taste is sweet, boozy but not as much as I expected, lots of roasted malts, molasses, little bit of chocolate, vanilla, coal. Full body with good carbonation, very sticky on the palate. Great beer.

Bottle from my brother for my birthday! Pours utterly black with a tiny amount of foam which disappeared rather quickly. Thick oily appearance. Aroma: A load of coffee. Dark malts, liquorice, a bit of booze, spicy, some black pepper, a bit minty, hints of hops Flavour: very thick oily mouthfeel. This beer is an explosion of flavours on so many fronts, it’s hard to process it all. The complexity is unmatched in my opinion. Dark malts are intense and the beer is rather sweet. There’s a huge amount of coffee and other roast flavours. The bitterness is intense but also very interesting, the hops is noticeable and accompanies the malt flavour perfectly, giving an earthy and herbal edge. Finish is sweetish and not too dry. Has a lovely warming feel without being too boozy at all. Simply amazing.
