bottle & keg, special
A hoppy menage a trois of epic proportions, Magic Stone Dog is a rustic farmhouse pale ale mash up. Brewed in collaboration with Greg Koch (Stone) and Rich and Stu (Magic Rock) just before our AGM, Magic Stone Dog has the best qualities of a saison and a pale ale, combined.
The nose has a citrus punch straight from the US West Coast, boasting zest, pineapple and orange notes, offset against a big spicy clove warmth courtesy of the saison yeast.
This continues into the flavour, where the best of both worlds combine - orange, spice, a touch of lemony tartness - and sit alongside a thirst- quenching dryness and refreshing effervescence. This bright, zesty, subtly tart, Belgian-inspired brew is the perfect beer to enjoy during the Indian summer we all know is definitely coming. Definitely. For sure.
Malts: Extra Pale Amber Wheat Rye Oats
Hops: Amarillo Simcoe
Twist: Mash up style with both saison and pale ale character

330ml bottle from Brewdog online store. Clear golden colour, foam white head that dissipates away and aroma of malt, citrus zest, fruity, yeasty. Taste is malt & grain, lemony citrus, honey, yeast, straw, biscuit and some light bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry crisp light bitter finish. Quite OK.

Bottle@rotterdam. Golden, light hzy. Fruityness. Hay malty, belgy yeasty, citrus orange zest, green berries. Dry finish, bitters. Very fruity ale. Hot day summer drink. A bit harsh right now.

330ml Bottle from Good Spirits Co in Glasgow (£2.40):
I had high hopes for this one going in given that itís a collaboration between three excellent breweries but in truth it failed to deliver, at least in part. The beer was quite enjoyable but it wasnít as good as Iíve come to expect from these three craft breweries, the aroma in particular being a real disappointment and what brought the beer down some in my opinion of it.

Bottle from BottleDog. Pours a golden yellow colour with high carbonation. A slightly odd concept this one; not the beer, that is fine. Pleasant crisp malt, moderate hoppiness with an American fruity accent, medium bitterness, a nice bit of Belgian yeastiness. By the standards of Brewdog and Stone, it really isnít that hoppy. I love this style, and itís decently executed, Iíd perfectly happily have buckets of this as a summer drinking beer. Not entirely sure why it needed three brewers, rye, oats, spices and a ímash upí style label though.

Bottle in the fucken sky, thanks to Foigus, 02/09/14. Clear golden with moderately appointed off white spotting and edgework. Nose is straw, light yeast notes, peachy, orange pithdom, bread, pissy pangs. Taste comprises tangy citric peel, yeast esters, lemon rind, straw, light spice, lemon tangus. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light spritzicals, crisp semi drying closure. Ok - came over more saisonic than Belgo, decent enough, wonít be forming a queue to have again mind!

Growler fill from Bottledog. Bright clear gold beer, decent off white head. Palate is light and crispy. Very light malts. Floral yeast, light citrus. Good balance. Light crisp finish. Mmm, thought this would be a lot more exciting, itís decent but where is the Brewdog and Stone punch? Tame.

Bottle from Redmonds. Clear gold, white head, disappears to literally nothing. Very sweet candy aroma, some spice from the Belgium yeast. Flavour is better - dry coriander spice, some sweet malt. Loads of fizz. Light body. Alright, fairly straightforward.
