On tap. Clear amber with a creamy off-white head. Heavy iodine aroma. Solid body, rough and unrefined with heavy smoke, tar and iodine. Very bitter and boozy finish. In your face brutal. 270511

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from RealAle.com in Twickenham. Pours clear copper with a beige head. Aroma of smokey, oaky malt. Flavor is strong smoke with some almost lost sweet caramel. From the little I can tell, the beer is very tasty. However, the excessive smoke tends to make that difficult to discern. As time goes on it develops a certain amount of bitter. This sort of thing works much better with Impy Stouts.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
33cl bottle. It pours a murky dark brown with some bubbles and a thin head of lace. Nose of peaty whisky (completely dominant)! The taste is hazelnuts but with overwhelming peaty whisky chasing it down. The palate has big structure at the start but it is clumsy and unbalanced. Overall, if I wanted whisky, I’d just have had a whisky. However, I do want to drink it, so that says something.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at The Rake, thanks to Tom. Pours a dark copper, with a medium beige head. This was packed full of flavour, im sure i didnt get all of them out with the 2 halfs i had. The laphroigh was immediately apparent, as was some fudge. Sweet dough, aniseed and shortbread came through as it warmed up. A fair amount of heat in the finish.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 26, 2011 Keg at BrewDog Edinburgh. Beer no. 100! Hazy light brown, light off-white head. Odd colour. Great smell. Chocolate, raisins, big and rich. Taste is malty, faint chocolate, some smoke. Not as sweet as expected. Medium bitter, sticky finish. Not overpowering, a little bland maybe. Still, I quite like it. 7, 4, 6, 3, 16
Bottle at home, not sure if it’s a different batch to the keg. Darkish copper, light off-white head. Nose is whisky, whisky, whisky, smoky peat, slightly earthy, iodine. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly nutty, smooth, before being absolutely ruined by booze and smoke. Not good. 5, 4, 5, 2, 15

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2011 10 nov 2011, bottle. Smells musty like mothballs or cobwebs. Tastes like it has been aged in Islay casks. Sadly, it actually tastes alright but it tastes nothing like the beer I had on tap at their bar. This is stupid. Why can’t they make a consistent product?
(original rating 8 2 6 3 14 = 3.3)nutty tan and very murky.
gorgeous nose. big soft, wet raisins and alcohol but not aggressive alcohol. very balanced aroma.
thin and mostly flat. not syrupy.
taste leaves something to be desired. some mild raisin but more powdered chocolate drink flavour. okay but not good.
