COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
5am Saint is The Holy Grail of red ales. We live in a world of disposable deities. Someone, somehow has managed to press that big, flashing moronic override button and we’re hard wired straight into the pockets of false idols trying to make a quick buck. Sadly, for a lot of people the same mentality applies to beer. But who’s to know what’s worth worshiping when monolithic advertising budgets have you sucked down the rabbit hole in the blink of an eye? At BrewDog we are on a mission to open as many people’s eyes as possible. Cast away any aspersions and let the crook of BrewDog be your guide in a whirlwind of conformity and mediocrity. Once this ruby liquid forms a foamy halo around your glass, you’ll never want to look back.

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2010 Bottle 12C. Pours amber with a small beige head. Aroma is of lots of grapefruit and resin over some caramel. There’s some visible carbonation but mouthfeel is curiously flat. Taste is again mostly about hops - they’re quite bitey and the grapefruit is almost astringent. There’s some biscuit and dough just detectable, but the malt is pretty much overwhelmed. Way out of balance at least to my tastes, but the aromatics are fresh tasting and the bitterness - whilst more than the beer can take - is not so much to make it tiring to drink. [3.2]

A much better bottle. Large beige head, much more alive mouthfeel, no particular astringency. Still disjointed and unbalanced (as above) but pretty tasty.

Bottle from Bert’s Bierhuis. Pours a brownish/orange beer with a good white head. Big overwhelming aroma which I really liked. Hints of spices, grapefruit and a lot of hops. Taste is also very hoppy with a decent aftertaste. Enjoyed every sip. Hops, hops & hops!

Pours dark reddish brown with a large off-white head. Aroma is heavy on the grapefruit of all things, along with leaves, bell peppers, wheat, caramel, and plant store aromas. Flavor is also a hop assault with astringent grapefruit, plants, dirt, ash, breadcrust, but really very little malt backbone. Finishes tangy with grapefruit, wood, char, grass, and burnt toast. Very bitter. Mouthfeel is surprisingly fluffy and light, but the lack of malt doesn’t do the beer any favors, for me at least. It’s interesting to have a light amber/ESB with this much dominant hop character, but damn!

Bottle. Pours a deep amber with rocky cream coloured head. Some lacing as it falls away. Heaps of dry hoping has left huge though slightly harsh resiny grassy hop aromas with some citrus (grapefruit and lemon) coming through., Not much in the way off malt to balance. Flavours are very bitter thanks to all the hops though there is slightly more malt sweetness to balance. Finish is extremely resiny. Mouthfeel is a tad thin. Good beer

Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds, drunk at home watching the Masters. Dark orange pour with a lingering off white head. Resinous hop aplenty in the nose with caramel malt and citrus notes. Flavour walked a similar path, fruity with some great hoppage in evidence. Lingering bitter finish . Really tasty stuff, could very happily drink a load of this. Another top notch effort from BD.

Bottle. Dark amber beer with a strongish head. The aroma is very well hopped, and the flavour is also very well hopped with a smooth slightly yeasty finish. Overall a very nice well hopped beer in the American style.

12 oz bottle bottle from OTM. Pours a nice deep amber with a small white head. The nose is sweet with floral hop nectar, some fruit characters too. Mild hop flavors, some crystallized caramel, bitterness, and a dry finish.

Bottle; glad this one was at a reasonable price. Pour a rich auburnish color with a big frothy, off white head. Aroma was absolutely delicious, especially for the style; sweet, fruity, caramel, flowers and citrus. REally top notch nose. Flavor was not as good, but that was admittedly a tall order. More earthy, with some caramel, bread, citrus, and fruit. On the whole, the nose was the star of the show. Great stuff there.
