5am Saint is The Holy Grail of red ales. We live in a world of disposable deities. Someone, somehow has managed to press that big, flashing moronic override button and we’re hard wired straight into the pockets of false idols trying to make a quick buck. Sadly, for a lot of people the same mentality applies to beer. But who’s to know what’s worth worshiping when monolithic advertising budgets have you sucked down the rabbit hole in the blink of an eye? At BrewDog we are on a mission to open as many people’s eyes as possible. Cast away any aspersions and let the crook of BrewDog be your guide in a whirlwind of conformity and mediocrity. Once this ruby liquid forms a foamy halo around your glass, you’ll never want to look back.

Good Reds are hard to come by, ones that stack up in flavour with their more sought after brethren, the Pales and IPAs. Thank God for the 5A.M. Saint. Tis beer does it all right; the appearance is a rusty orangey red with a lacing off white head. Notes of caramel, honey, butterscotch, leather and some mild barnyard dance with fresh smelling resin and herbal hops. The resulting taste is a blend of all those smells held together with a pleasing mid body and a fine bitter aftertaste.

With its fruity, hoppy aroma and a taste from dry red fruits, caramels, and a slight nutty finish; this one emerges as an amber I could actually drink.

12oz bottle marked down at Bishop’s Cellar. Pours a transparent reddish amber with a thin beige head. Vibrant nose with caramel, toffee malts, a bit of hoppiness (touch of grapefruit?). Rich malty flavour with a rising bitterness at the finish. Kinda sticky on the palate. Wish it lived up to its aroma, but still very pleasant.
