5am Saint is The Holy Grail of red ales. We live in a world of disposable deities. Someone, somehow has managed to press that big, flashing moronic override button and we’re hard wired straight into the pockets of false idols trying to make a quick buck. Sadly, for a lot of people the same mentality applies to beer. But who’s to know what’s worth worshiping when monolithic advertising budgets have you sucked down the rabbit hole in the blink of an eye? At BrewDog we are on a mission to open as many people’s eyes as possible. Cast away any aspersions and let the crook of BrewDog be your guide in a whirlwind of conformity and mediocrity. Once this ruby liquid forms a foamy halo around your glass, you’ll never want to look back.
Malts: Marris Otter, Crystal Malt Hops: Simcoe, Chinook, Nelson Sauvin, Centennial Twist: Loads of late hops and bucket-loads of dry hops

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2011 Bottle into glass at Holyrood 9A. Pours a dark copper with a bubbly white head, some retention. Aroma is pine, sweet berries and caramel. Medium carbonation. Bitter with a nice sweet malty note. Tasty and rich with a nice sticky bitter finish. Update - this has become one of my go-to beers. That nose is amazing! Definitely a grower, possibly my favourite amber ale.

Pours an amber hue. Ample off-white head that dies down to a 2mm layer. Leaves plenty of lacing. Smells of huge hops and citrus. A slight vegetal aroma - almost like an earlier adopter of homebrewing would have (I know, I’ve had it in mine before). That’s about all there is in the nose, hard to get past the hops. Big bitter bite on first sip. A slight bitterness on the back end as well. There is a watered down malt taste. A little bit of sweetness pokes its head around the corner, but hides pretty quickly.

This seems to be a watered down IPA with some amber coloring thrown in. Not a bad beer, but there really isn’t any character past the hops.

0.33L bottle, small stable head, clear copper darkish red colour, aroma of herbs, pine and nuts with a hint of fruit in the back, flavour of bread with some tobbaco and a medium flowery metalic bitterness, Fair, but nothing spectacular.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2013 Pours a hazy amber with a nice beige head. Aroma is heavy on the hops with sweet malts and citrus. Taste is mainly of pine, hops, caramel malts. Very good. Very popular at out store. Price makes it more inviting

UPDATED: APR 25, 2013 30.4.2011: Bottle. Pours amber with a small head. Aroma is strongly pine and juniper with some berriness in it. Taste is pine and especially juniper with some juniper berries. No fruitiness or tones of red berries that I enjoyed before. A disappointment.

23.1.2011: Cask @ Gallows Bird, Espoo, RAF2011. A very nice amber color with a small head. Aroma is pine, grapefruit, hops, a hint of berries, perhaps strawberry? Taste is a lot of pine, some grapefruit. Palate is excellent, fairly light and carbonated.

Embrouille (2803) - SWITZERLAND - FEB 23, 2011
Bottled 33cl. It pours a hazy amber beer with a creamy, nicely lacing light beige head. The aroma is quite inviting, reminiscent of white wine, crystal malts, caramel, grapefruit and hop resin- spicy and rather strong. Medium bodied. Leafy. Good balance. Slightly peppery on the swallow. Caramel and grapefruit in the finish which makes you eager to take another sip. Flawless and pleasant.

Aamuyön pyhimys näyttää kuulaan vaalean ruskealta ja omaa vaalean vaahdon. Sen tuoksussa on karamellia ja monimutkaista humalaisuutta. Oluen maussa on selkeä humalan puraisu ja katkeruutta on sopivasti. Napakka, hieman karhea maku ja ihan sopiva runko tämän vahvuiseksi olueksi. Brewdogin oluet eivät todellakaan jätä kylmäksi.
