5am Saint is The Holy Grail of red ales. We live in a world of disposable deities. Someone, somehow has managed to press that big, flashing moronic override button and we’re hard wired straight into the pockets of false idols trying to make a quick buck. Sadly, for a lot of people the same mentality applies to beer. But who’s to know what’s worth worshiping when monolithic advertising budgets have you sucked down the rabbit hole in the blink of an eye? At BrewDog we are on a mission to open as many people’s eyes as possible. Cast away any aspersions and let the crook of BrewDog be your guide in a whirlwind of conformity and mediocrity. Once this ruby liquid forms a foamy halo around your glass, you’ll never want to look back.
Malts: Marris Otter, Crystal Malt Hops: Simcoe, Chinook, Nelson Sauvin, Centennial Twist: Loads of late hops and bucket-loads of dry hops

Glory amber beer. Smallish off-white head. Sweet malty aroma. Rhubarb. Incredible head. Full malty flavor with a little bit of malt and sweetness. Fully satisfying for an amber ale. A style that’s difficult to satisfy for a hop head. You can easily enjoy this brew. So do it.

Aroma: citric, lemony, grass, straw, a bit like trashy blonde, but with a thicker malt backbone. Appearance: Amber colour, medium creamy off-white head. Flavour: I do not like Nelson sauvin, to me it has a quality that’s like burnt rubber in the retro nasal action. Otherwise this beer is fruity with blackcurrants and a good bite. Mouthfeel: Average. Total: This is a true quality brew, but nelson sauvin spoils the experience for me..

{thoughts} Cloying hops rain on an otherwise fine parade of juicy malts.

{elements} Clear, amber hue; short, white froth. Caramel and oranges / grapefruit plus mint / rosemary. Moderately sweet, low to moderate acidity, moderate bitterness; caramel and toasty malts with a clingy bitterness and resinous aftertaste. Moderate carbonation, medium body, watery texture. 25 cl draft @ O’Hara’s.

Where to begin... Hazy, muddy, ruby color with a cream colored, full, creamy, dense head which settles to a thin lasting layer and leaves thick, drippy lace. The nose is simcoe mostly with passionfruit and rustic, but also smaller notes of pine, pink grapefruit, kiwi, and faint spice and floral. The flavor is a bit of a let down with not enough malt presence or bitterness to match the intense hop flavors; less than moderate bitterness, light toasted caramel, still some rustic, light floral, and pink grapefruit. The palate is medium, soft to lively, slightly dry, and a bit watery. The beer finishes slightly dry, toasty, piney, rustic, and some grapefruit lingering. Certainly the hoppiest table strength beer I have had to date, as much hop flavor as many imperial IPA. I would like to have a bit more bitterness and strength (ie an IPA or imperial pale) because the hop flavors worked very well in this one. Nice one.

Bottle enjoyed at home
Dark red, massive tanned head. Aroma of citrus, zests, grapefruit and grass. Also some earthy notes. Taste has some sweetness and a malt body that feels to thin and weak to match the aroma and finish. Feel is quite oily. Finish is very hoppy and bitter. Nice hop tones of grass and citrus

Bottle 33cl, a clear amber beer with huge head. Nose is very hopy, IPA like. Aroma is on lemon and hops resin, body is watery, malt can only be tasted at the finish. Very less complex, just hopy, a bit boring, finish is on peppery notes, less honey notes, even the Spitfire is better.

12oz. bottle from distributor rep, poured into tulip glass. Pours yellow straw in color with a white somewhat bubbly head. Sits in glass a hazy light brown/tan color. Aroma: Big floral hops, citrus, lightly toasted. Taste: Lightly sweet at first for a short time, soon to be balanced by the hops, then finishes quite bitter. Cereal, oats, lemon, and grapefruit. Palate: Big carbonation mouth feel but smooth, heavy bitter aftertaste on finish. A pretty good amber...I would suggest it for those looking for one, but not really for me...a bit too hoppy for my taste.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Dark orange colour with an off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is floral, herbal and summer fruits with a touch of caramel. The tast follows the aroma - lots of sweet, caramel malt nicely balanced by the hoppiness. Light palate and a long, fruity, bitter finish. A winner.
