Triple Dry Hopped Imperial Red Ale

Got a chance to try this at the Release Party at the Cask and Kitchen. I would have called it an Imperial Red Ale that is VERY well hopped. Deep amber red color and a nice thin head that did not last long. Smelled of hops, a bit of malt and then more hops, a bit of pine resin but not much more. The taste was all hops a slight amount of booze, which is amazing as it this was 18%! Not really all that much character or depth of flavors and little balance. Still this is an Imperial Triple dry hopped Red ale and Balance may not be what they were going for. Felt very nice in the mouth, good medium bodied and pretty smooth. Drinkability may be low but it is very strong in both alc% and flavor.

375ml bottle thanks to Stu. Pours a cloudy brown with very little head. The nose has a savoury/earthy thing which is almost meaty, also rubbery note with a sour edge to it which makes me think of ginger bread. The taste is of more ginger bread and rubber, with more savoury meat notes after, then a pate finish. The palate is rich, full bodied, a big tangy and creamy texture and an elegant finish. Overall, this beer is hugely individual, I love it.

Bottle from Coppers in Newcastle. A very dark red brown beer with a very thick oily mouthfeel. Extremely warming sweet cherry, strawberries, vanilla and slight leather notes with a strong warming fruity alcoholic finish.

Bottle at Mikkeller Bar, May 2012. Amber with no head. Sweet with a lot of malt. The alcohol was there, the mouth feel was thick. Not much hops left in the beer. An ok beer.

Mikkeller bar, maj 2012: Sötaktig källardoft, söt smak och ganska lätt - det kommer en viss hetta i eftersmaken. Trevlig moden och fruktig.

Bottle 375 ml @ Bir&Fud bottega (Rome, Italy), 16/06/10. Pouring this one reminds me sorta of a pale kriek: no head, partially plum, some orange, all into a really dark outline. Aroma is dominated by candy sugar, strawberry syrup, and has the elegance of passing between sweetness of candy fruit and sharpness of green tomatoes. Notes of apricot jam and red orange too. But is gently: hops is gone, absolutely, and beer has evolved. Body is medium to full, but drinkability is so high and alcohol is just a number matter. In my mouth I say 10% at the most, not 18% absolutely. Mouthfeel is fruity compared to classic barley wines, even if maintain the familiar fortified flavor of the style. But, out of the expected, isn’t the dullness of sweet wines (no matter white or red); it’s the dryness of a strong red wine. Good fizzy texture you could feel even in the finish. In the end: odd barley wine, interesting, but not outstanding.

Bottle shared with (and great courtasy of) the fantastic Bergen tasting crew with such stars as ClubGonzo, Inbreak and Palme, and the mighty StoreMy. The beer is a bit unclear and is amber with a very small off-white head. In the nose I sence leather, oak, dried fruits, and this perfumy smell towards alcohol. In addition, it has a touch of cat piss. Personally I think it is unattractive when it becomes too much of this, but in this case is held nicely in check by the rest of the aroma. The taste also offers dried fruits and leather, but also spices, wood, and a little alcohol. The beer feels a bit dry towards the end with a medium bitterness. Feels soft and smooth in the mouth, and is a straightforward, fairly bitter barley wine.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Has been put away for almost a year now. Opened on Ryan’s birthday. Pour is a thick and murky toffee colour with no head to speak of. Nose is not too bad. Rather sweet and sugary with loads of malt driven undertones. Heaps of caramel and toffee in there with dried apricot and vanilla. Taste is a little one dimensional for my liking. Tons of caramel and biscuit with a bitter sweet finish. Not too boozy considering the abv. Thin and oily palate. Not my kinda thing

375 ml bottle. Bottled on 16.06.2010. Bottle no. 124/3600.
Pours hazy red-brown color with no head. A very strong aroma of plums, raisins, mild caramel notes, malts and some sugar. Flavor of caramel, toffee, malts, ripe fruits like plums and dates, some sugar and . Quite easy to drink considering the high abv. Fruity and sweet palate with a very short sweet plumy finish.

37,5 cl bottle @ lusikka. Bottle #0124, bottled 16.06.2010 (japanese marking: BBE 28.01.2020)
Aroma is sweet and rather strong on plums, raisins and berries. Flavour has some slightly stinging alcohol, plums, raisins and berries. Some hops can also be observerd. A bit weird.
