The beer is an 11.5% Imperial Brown Ale which we have aged in amazing Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga. Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

Bottle (33cl). Very dark brown colour. Inch-thick beige head, good retention, leaves a wavy lace pattern. Very sweet malty aroma with raisins, molasses, oaked red wine, sherry, cream, coffee, cola. Full body, flat carbonation. Sweet taste, balanced by a notable, slightly vinegary, acidity and a mild bitterness. Extremely long bitter-sweet aftertaste.

Black with brown head - Sweet malt and wineus aroma - very good sweet malt body with dark fruits, some wine notes - Finish is lingering sweet dark fruits and malt with some nice alcohol heat in the back - very good and easy to enjoy on a cold winter night

Pours a deep, murky brown with a thick brown head. Aroma is dried fruits, oak, chocolate, subtle red wine nuances. Flavour is sweet and replicates the nose - lots of dried fruit, toast. Finish is sweet, tart, and roasted. So good.

Bottle. Murky nut brown, brief low tan head. Sweet, rich, malty aroma with lots of Demerara sugar, brown bread, molasses. The palate delivers thick malty richness, reflecting the nose but with deeper elements of figs, raisins, dark fruits. The end brings a surprising hoppy bitter twist. God I love rich malty beers!

Tanks Brad! Murky brown, long lasting light brown compact head. Interesting aroma - cherries, some subdued sweetness, brown sugar, some sort of version of vanilla ice cream, blood orange, Swedish berry candies. Taste is also very interesting - different by a lot. Hints of smoke, pepper, plum, brown sugar, hints of something vinous, pretty good. Smooth drinking!

Cirrhosis (1224) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - APR 4, 2013
Dark brown body with a thick creamy film floating on top. Wow this smells good! Heavy malty aroma, lots of fruit, soya sauce, I do hit wine. Taste is the same but add a shit load of burnt sugar. Now when warm red wine is huge but has no acidity. An odd bitterness surrounds this beer. This was a strangely good beer.

Pours dark brown, almost black with a small head and steady carbonation. Rich caramel & chocolate malt with berries, dates & grape fruity flavours, with a creamy texture as it goes down. Very smooth and the alcohol is very well hidden. Really good beer.

Pours deep dark brown and produces a thick brown head. The nose is very fruity, blueberry, cherry, grapes, apples, some cotton candy, booze, maple syrup and unfortunately, while not overwhelming, turpentine. The taste is heavy sweet with minimal bitterness. The end comes out a little more bitter. The texture is smooth and creamy, the body is heavy and the finish is long. Not my favorite of the abstrakt series, but not bad.

375ml corked bottle pours a deep amber brown color with a small light beige head that leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark fruits (possibly grapes/raisins/dates) with some roasted grains and mild oak. Taste is dominated by a dark fruity sweetness with a light roast bitterness and a mild alcohol burn in the finish. A very interesting and unique brew that was very much enjoyed.

[375ml bottle, Appellation Wines, Edinburgh] Left for 6-8 months in sweet, sherry-like red wine casks, produces a nose that is just incredible – soft, sweet, juicy and with a background hum of alcohol. Extremely porty, in every respect. Apparently, the brown ale was brewed to be very bitter to compensate for the expected sweet pickup – and as a result, everything has married together beautifully. An Abstrakt almost on a par with AB:04 [18022013]
