The beer is an 11.5% Imperial Brown Ale which we have aged in amazing Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga. Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

Pours a standard Abstrakt body, i.e. it looks pretty flat. The colour is very dark brown, while the "head" consists of a thin, light-brown film with some big bubbles floating on top. The aroma is strong, sweet, malty and lightly roasted, with dark caramel (very dark, maybe itís closer to burnt sugar) and dark dried fruits. Also come delicious vinous alcohol notes that reminds me of sherry. In the back I also get some spices. The taste is heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter. The strong flavours follow the aroma, maybe with a tad more spices and herbs. The red wine barrels havenít produced any noticeable sourness or bretty notes, and that suits me just fine. The body is full, the texture is lovely oily, but as always when it comes to an Abstrakt, the close to flat carbonation isnít fitting. I really need to try a fresh Abstrakt.

A deep dark brown beer with a light brown head. Caramel, chocolate, vanilla and fruit all rise out of the glass. More fruit and some woody flavours establish them selves in your mouth leading to a long roasted espresso finish. Very well balanced yet complex.

375ml bottle. Pours a hazy, dark ruddy chestnut brown color, with three fingers of densely foamy, pale beige head, which leaves thick lace. Aroma of bready caramel malt, sharply musty, dark fruit, oily nuttiness, and earthy, wet leafy hops. The taste is lightly roasted caramel malt, nut butter, plum pudding, understated sweet red wine, earthy and leafy hops, and a touch of warming alcohol. Medium bodied with mellow carbonation, slight tannins and sweet earthy finish.

Took a long damn time to cork out. Brown muddy pour, with light tan head. Huge aroma, reminds me of lost abbey deliverance, I get sweet vanilla bourbon undertones, lots of oak, and some malty sweetness. Taste is rich, with butterscotch, a hit of booze towards the middle and a hot finish. Yummy.

375ml bottle. Pours an opaque deep chestnut, bordering on black, with a tiny light beige head, which neither lasts well nor leaves any lacing to speak of. Rye bread and biscuit malt notes, slightly musty red wine and very mild floral hops make up the aroma. A touch of sweet red wine introduces it, giving way to moderate fruity, spicy hops. The wine comes in strongly at the mid-palate, which is dominated by its slightly musty sweetness, although a touch of rye bread malt does come through. Charry oak leads into an oaked red wine finish, which leaves a slight alcoholic aftertaste. This is not BrewDogís best effort. It lacks the hops presence implied by the "imperial brown ale" styling, and is dominated by the musty sweetness of the wine, making for a fairly messy beer.
