Bottle. Dark brown, almost black with brown/red edge. Tiny tan head. Nose is coffee, cream, pepper, a hint of ginger and some woody smoke with blackberries. Body is quite slick, with little carbonation and giving a very smokey woody taste with some blackberries, currants and plum fruitiness. More spice, ginger and black pepper. A little licorice. Some vinous notes in the finish of the beer. When it’s sipped and savoured, this is pretty nice. I can imagine that this would go rather well with a well-cooked steak. Yum!

Ernest (6199) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 27, 2012
Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is heavily malty (dark chocolate, molasses, roasted grain), with notes of juniper/wintergreen/mint, alcohol, Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Full body, creamy/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Big for sure, but surprisingly not terribly complex. Very sweet but not oppressively so...can’t drink a lot, but it’s not really off-putting.

169/9819; bottled. Beer is medium-dark coffee brown, nearly opaque. Head is thin, tan, dry, fleeting. Aroma is thick with branches of hearty malt notes on a pointy trunk of spiky hops. Strong keys of resin, pine, roasted grain; moderate notes of dark chocolate syrup, lighter yeast note of basement, along with auxiliary notes of toasted bread, sasaparilla, trace of smokey licorice. Flavor is big. Moderately-to-very sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Texture is syrupy, moderately thick and viscous. Big, super-rich, cocophanous.

Not at all impressed with this beer. Abstrakt 10 was much better. Smells great, but also strange, tastes good and is strong in flavor. The aftertaste is empty unfortunately. I thought it would last longer. This is bottle 651 of 9819 that I drink.
