AB:11 is an imperial black barley wine brewed with ginger, black raspberries and chipotle peppers. A 12.8% rollercoaster of ginger zestiness, chipotle smokiness all bound together with dark berry tartness and the decadent residual body of a black barley wine.

Bottled. Pours pitch black with a small brown head. Smells abit barry, roasted malt and alcohol. Tastes creamy roasted malt, alot of malt and alcohol.

About the only Brewdog Abstrakt beer that has really disappointed me. The chipotle peppers dominate the taste profile. There might be a hint of Ginger, but I don’t taste raspberry or any other overt berry presence. The barleywine body and malt, as well as anticipated warmth from the alcohol level are unfortunately missing.

From the very old notes, hence this is not a real rating, but more just a mark to myself that I have tried this at one point. Bitter beer with a lot of notes of chocolate, body is rather thin for such a big beer.

Bottle sample at beer market tlv. Thanks Stas. Black and a small white ring. Coffee, vanilla, some coconut aroma. A little bitter, roasty, velvety, taste. Smooth and full body, long velvety taste. Good.

Bottle sample at Beer Market TLV. Thanks Stas. Dark brown. Aroma of malt, caramel, dark fruits, lots of ginger and alcohol. Sweet and umami flavor with caramel, soy sauce, dark fruits, ginger, and a finish with alcohol and spicy chipotle. Boozy and syrupy mouthfeel.

KØLF 281214. Dark brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is alcohol, berries, licorice, ginger, oak. Flavour is alcohol, smoke, coffee, berries, licorice, ginger, oak. Full body. Very nice beer.

375ml bottle #7193 / 9819, 12.8% bottled in Sep 2012. Black, small ring of off-white head. Aroma is liquorice allsorts, car air freshner and strong pine. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is piney, honey, crystallised ginger, dates, sherry. The berries aren’t really coming through any more. Too sweet for me, like most of this series, but this one stands out as one of the most interesting flavours. Bit rough on the stomach.

Coming up to its third birthday [Bottle 6429 of 9819] I sat over this and sipped on it for a while. Poured dark tan with practically no head. Aroma was a hit of blueberrys at first, then came the ginger. Hidden away was chocolate, caramel and roasty notes with a lingering of spice in the nostrils. Just like its nose, the taste followed a similar pattern, sweet dark fruit (mainly blackberries), a ginger tang, molasis, caramel, toffee, rounded off with some slight bittering near the end and finishing off with small amounts of spice from the the peppers, Overall this beer is more interesting than delicious. Not to say that this isn’t a well crafted beer, it is by all means. But like the abstrakt series, this beer isn’t here to please the average beer drinker. Its here to be different, to be sat over an analysed. If thats what you’re in the mood for, this will not disappoint. That is, if you can still find one of these bottles.

Pours deep brown with no head. Nose is hazelnut, chocolate and caramel. Aromas are roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, with spices (especially ginger of course). Oily texture, no carbonation. Surprisingly dry finish, with spices and sweet chocolate.

The eleventh issuing in this fascinating series, intended to exalt the art of brewing to its purest form. Three year old vintage bottle - of which the synthetic cork was very hard to remove. The front label is as concise as it is powerful, with the letters in relief. Very dark mahogany brown colour with a ’black soul’ but transparent on the edges; negligible head, all I got (with forcing) was a very thin, yellowish beige rim around the glass and a thin, discontinuous veil over the rest of the liquid’s surface. Powerful, enticing, unusual and complex bouquet of sweets and spices; the first thing which jumps to your nose, is the ethereal, unmistakable smell of (actual) dried ginger, after which all kinds of less volatile odours of chocolate sauce, meat broth, fish sauce, hazelnut oil, exotic peppers, crème de cassis, very old madera, tea, paprika, India ink, curry, leather, vanilla, basil, diluted coffee and, last but certainly not least, soy sauce rise up from the glass. The taste is equally intense and equally complex, candied sweetness and syrupy chocolate sauce at first, somewhat tart presence of the blackcurrant, but most strikingly: spices immediately present, as well as the kind of soy sauce saltiness which typifies yeast autolysis in old dark beers, but not too disturbing here. Smooth and thick, deeply (and genuinely) caramelly and chocolatey, oily maltiness follows, supple with a soft, low carbonation but some delicate tingling still there. The added spices become increasingly stronger towards the finish, with a retronasal effect of - you guessed it - dried ginger but also a drying effect I remember from beers heavily spiced with coriander seed; the peppers add a touch of heat, some peppery hops support this and blend in nicely, and a warming, quite strong, liqueurish alcohol effect further dried the throat. Result: a sweet onset, full malty and spicy middle phase and very long, dry, bitterish, (perhaps too) alcoholic and very spicy, warming finish leaving you in a state of wonder and respect. Maltiness lingers on with a roasted bitter touch, but nothing coffeeish as e.g. a heavy stout would have. Unfortunately, the saltiness was the last impression in the mouth, which did put me off a bit. The spiciness also becomes somewhat too intense in the end - I think the combination of ginger and hot peppers is just a bit over the top, though I cannot but sympathize with this kind of boldness when it comes to making arty craft beers... I can’t help feeling a bit privileged to be able to taste this rare bottle (n° 9366 of only 9819 total) and I must say it was an exciting experience. Not something to simply drink, but something to savour and contemplate over carefully (this is mighty strong even for a barley wine), like anyone with good taste - and I’m not saying this applies to myself - would treat an old single malt. Liquid art indeed and absolutely inspiring if you’re a true beer afficionado, like most of Brewdog’s most elusive brews. But something in my head tells me this behemoth was a bad choice to start a tasting session with...
