375ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a moderate beige head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. The aroma has dark chocolate, warm chilli, cured meat and savoury malt notes. Mild herbal and lemon hops up front gradually segue into sweet but zingy ginger. This blends surprisingly well with rich dark chocolate and toasted rye bread malt in the mid-palate. Warming chilli comes in towards the finish, where it blends very nicely with ginger and dark chocolate. There is an almost whisky and dry ginger aftertaste. This is one of those out there BrewDog beers where all the strange ingredients come together and work very well. A rich and enjoyable brew.

Very dark brown, almost black, color without head and carbonation. Aroma has notes of red fruits, molasses, candy sugar, toffee, barley malts and caramel. Flavor is quite the same as aroma standing out hints of molasses, ripe red fruits like berries, some wooden notes, notes of honey and sweet red wine. The final is moderate sweet, no cloying with a low presence of alcohol that is hidden by caramel and toasted malts notes. creamy, dense and smooth on palate.

Des sucres féroces, sucre candi, chocolat, mélasse suivi d’une astringence à peine piquante qui dissipe la corpulence massive en entrée de bouche. Inintéressante créature de dégustation lente.

Bottle. Dark brown to black with a small dense good lacing beige head. Minty nose, a bit like After Eight but with some dark berries as well. Full and fat with low carbonation. Again mint notes and something like wintergreen plants, almost perfumy like air freshener with chocolate and sugar. Alcohol heat. Soft and sweet wtih some bitterness and alcohol to balance it. Long spicy and light astringent finish. A bit much.

deep dark colour, practically no head, only some lacing, which also disappears within some minutes; aroma of biscuit, toffee, hints of chocolate, spicy notes, and dark berries; taste of biscuit, toffee, dried berries, some bitterness and spicy-peppery aftertaste; cool barley wine

Odense catch-up from the cellar. Black with a tiny off-white head. Aroma of licorice with a strong ginger note that appears very unusual for an imperial stout. Sweet and ginger dominated flavour with licorice, dark chocolate and fresh roasted coffee. Overwhelming ginger, but quite interesting

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours reddish black with a small blackish beige head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and spicy with biscuits, ginger ale, alcohol, raspberry jam, hay, black pepper corns, roasted malts and hints of bitter chocolate, honey and smoke. Taste is sweet and spicy with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, ginger, cardamon, black pepper corns, cloves, biscuits, caramel, hay, smoke, charred wood and hints of raspberry jam. Mouthfeel is round, cloying, sticky sweet, spicy astringent and medium bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny bitter and spicy with roasted malts, ginger snaps, raspberry jam, caramel, bitter chocolate and smoke. A terrible mix drenched in ginger. Doesn’t work out at all...

Draft at BrewDog, Shepherd’s Bush on 7 December 2013. Poured black with a dense tan head. Powerful aroma of dark fruit, stem ginger and alcohol. Boozy dark cake flavour with prunes, liquorice and bitter roasted malt to balance. Finish was burnt toast, oak and molasses with warming alcohol. Top barley wine.

Black body with a small, frothy head, this looks like another under-carbonated Abstrakt. Some lacing. The aroma is very strong, sweet and has lovely malty notes of dark caramel, dark chocolate and roasted notes. In addition it’s quite fruity, and in the back I get alcohol. The flavours are strong and very complex. Lightly roasted notes, dark caramel, dark chocolate, sweet and overripe fruits, liquorice, root beer and a pleasant chill burn in the aftertaste. I now read in the commercial description that the AB:11 is brewed with chipotle peppers, but I don’t really get the smoky flavours of this pepper, just the hot sensation. This is very sweet stuff, but both the moderate bitterness and the chill tame the sweetness quite efficiently. It’s a vinous brew, with well integrated and pleasant notes of alcohol. The body is full, the texture thick an oily, and even though the carbonation is extremely soft it fits the style well. A lovely beer!
[37.5 cl bottle, #5264/9819, enjoyed 16 months after bottling, from Vinmonopolet Vika, Oslo]
