Two years is a long time. Plus at BrewDog, we measure in dog years, which makes it feel like an eternity.
Back in 2012 we brewed this extra-small-batch prototype and rather than bottle it there and then (which we could have happily done) we locked it away in some gnarly old whisky barrels at the back of our Fraserburgh warehouse.
Before it even went into barrel, this stout had huge chocolate aromas and flavours, from the intense malt bill and cacao nibs, tempered with a roasty bitter espresso character and a spicy hop profile.
Two years in barrel has intensified the rich, round sweet malt flavours, and layered in deep chewy molasses, warming spicy brandy notes, and a liqueur coffee creaminess.
Black Eyed King Imp is an extremely small batch beer, and ultra-limited edition. This beer is worth spending an afternoon over, allowing the flavours to develop and unravel while you discuss philosophy/become one with the universe/ watch an entire box set of your choosing.

from Amstein - black beer under a little beige foam; huge roasted coffeish aroma with notes of whisky, walnuts, chocolate, molasses and cherries; full-bodied, oily and light sticky, some malt sweetness and a moderate bitterness; long roasted aftertaste of cacao, Lowland Whisky and coffee, lingering sweetness and woody notes - strong and very complex

Bottle at home. Gift, think it was from BrewDog’s online shop. Very dark brown, very little head. Killer aroma of cinnamon, chocolate, chilli, lemongrass. Intense out-of-this-world taste:sweet and spicy with a malty backbone, but allowing the hop character to shine through. Palette is surprisingly light for this beer, but e intense alcohol burn in the mellowing aftertaste makes up for it. An impy stout worthy of the BrewDog name.

Bottle shared by a kind soul at BBF’14. Pours dark brown to black, almost opaque, small marroon head. Nose is lots of freshly grinded cacao, bits of coffee beans and quite some vanilla in the back as well as a nice whisky oak touch. Full body with an overwhelming amount of taste, thick chocolate, cacao milk and mocca coffee cream. Nice!!

Rich chocolate and oaky nose. Slightly hot aroma. Beautiful black pour with a fine creamy head that dissipates quickly. Sweet and full bodied, very smooth.

The oak in this is really strong - this obviously spent time in an old barrel. Big, thick and with all the classic impy stouts flavours, but with the added oakiness and lingering whiskey notes. Long, dry finish and really improved as it warmed.

Dark enough brown, light enough tan head, Choc chip dry, gritty and lightly speyed nose. Luscious and sweet, drying and chewy spicy bite. Creamy charred marshmallow. Fades dryly but cleanly.
