COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled; Special.

Bourbon Baby is a baby Scotch ale which we’ve gone on to age in bourbon barrels. The Scotch ale base is light bodied and low ABV, and brings toasted shortcake and blossom honey flavours; the barrel ageing adds a demonic, dark vanilla twist. Rich brown sugar, hints of smoke, spiced fruit, chocolate and raisins are just some of the multitude of flavours that have developed.

Our aim was to showcase barrel ageing in a lower ABV beer and we felt the malty scotch ale base was the perfect way to do this. The body remains light, yet there is a complexity quite unlike anything you would normally expect in a Scotch ale.

Bottle at home. Dark brown colour, beige creamy head. Amazingly rich BA nose with dried and ripe fruits, roasted malty honey and coffee, bourbon, vanilla, smoke; taste gets these tones too but lacks a real depth of flavour, body and a lengthy finish. Low to medium carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a deep ruby-hued clear brown body with a medium creamy off-white head. Nose is vanilla, caramel, mild bourbon and hints of toffee, smoke dark malts and wood. Taste is caramel, wood, bourbon, vanilla fudge, toffee and hints of smoke and burnt sugar. Light body, medium carbonation. Although the idea of barrel aging a lower ABV ale is interesting, the lack of body remains a problem. This alone, I suspect, creates a feeling that the beer is rather watery although it does indeed reveal a bit of body. I find barrel aging to have a somewhat thinning mouthfeel effect on some beers, and this is one of them. Nice enough though.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. Very dark red-black coloured and pouring with a large foamy tan head. It has a strong oak, vanilla and whisky flavour, chocolate notes with a slightly thin body (compared with normal barrel aged beers) followed by more creamy vanilla and whisky on the finish. Nice!

Dark red brown appearance with just a little foamy head. Complex tastes of berries, dried fruit, chocolate, alcohol, some raisin and vanilla. Very carbonated

Quite interesting and a nicer beer than I expected! Aroma is quite complex, with Hickory wood, burnt sugar, and bbq rib sweetness. Main flavours are toffee sweetness, bourbon and an almost vegetal character. Nice balanced sweet and bitter finish. As others have commented, tastes like a higher ABV Scotch ale than 5.8%

From a 330ml bottle on 18/7/2015. Pours a deep brown with the barest of heads.Has a light whiff of bourbon and a touch of barbeque sauce. There’s a fair bit going on flavour wise, with toffee, caramel, vanilla, barbecued meat, a bit of dark fruit, and finishes off by a very distinct bourbon/whisky taste. The bitterness is modest and contains a touch of spice . Medium bodied with average carbonation. I’ve never been totally sold on barrel aged beers but this is quite interesting and rather good.
