Bottled; Special.

The beer is a 5.8% barrel-aged baby scotch ale called Bourbon Baby, which is the ideal accompaniment to this burger as the honey notes and spicy sweetness meld beautifully with the rich beef and tangy BBQ sauce. Bourbon Baby is light bodied and low ABV and packed with toasted shortcake and blossom honey flavours. We threw a load of First Gold, Willamette and Mt Hood hops at this beer and then barrel aged it for added complexity. The barrel ageing adds a demonic, dark vanilla twist. Rich brown sugar, hints of smoke, spice, chocolate and raisins are just some of the multitude of flavours that have developed.

Backlog rating. 33cl bottle from BD Shoreditch, London. It pours a deep ruby/amber color with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet and lightly boozy with notes of toffee, marsh mellow, burnt sugar, vanilla, light wood, faint hops and spices. Taste is quite sweet again, with notes of caramel, chocolate biscuit, vanilla, peppery wood, faint hops. Finishes a tad boozy and bitter. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Not sure I’d want to drink this one with a burger, a Punk IPA could do a better job I think

Tap at CBC 2014. Beer in the glass deep black, small head. Heavy malty aroma. Starts mild, malty, light notes of coffee, a bit woody. Finish milder, some earthy notes. Mild malty aftertaste. Not bad!

330ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£4.00):
Another highly enjoyable Brewdog offering, this one definitely goes some way to covering for the disappointment I had after trying their Magic Stone Dog collaboration with Magic Rock and Stone. Despite the fact it probably wouldn’t be my first choice of beer to pair with a burger I can see why people would enjoy the two together, it was smooth and not too light with plenty going for it; definitely one worth trying.

330ml bottle from Ales by Mail

BBE 14.02.16 - Pours dark reddish brown with a smooth light brown head. Aroma of buttery bourbon notes, wood, syrup, honey, toffee and caramel. Taste is sweet, light bodied and syrupy with loads of vanilla, oak, butter and toffee notes. Finish is sweet and watery(!) with some hoppiness, toffee, vanilla and oaky notes. Quite interesting, but feels a bit watery.

Bottle - Light grains and chocolate notes, with some barrel sweetness. Deep maroon with a beige head. Lots of barrel and bourbon notes, vanilla, caramel, chocolate and a nice rich finish. Quite big for the relatively low ABV.

Bottle at Grünerløkka Brygghus during Oslo Beer Week 2014. Dark brown body with a small tanned head. Chocolate aroma with bourbon, oak, raisin. Taste of bourbon, vanilla, strong coffee, light anise, good roasty malt bitterness, short chocolate and bourbon aftertaste. Quite nice.

Pours dark brown with slight red tint. Not quite porter black, but close. Nose is crazy vanilla and oak, straight out of the barrel. Quite light, what you’d expect from a Scotch ale, but with a really heavy vanilla flavor on top, with dry oakiness that’s quite interesting.
