12 oz. bottle from alexsdad06- thanks again, Brad! Pours a deep, basically opaque brown with a small khaki head. Aroma of dark chocolate, wood, dark, burnt malts, pine resin, and something like butterscotch or vanilla. The flavor largely followed suit, having a bitter bite underneath a lot of roast, earth, and a little balancing sweetness. Medium-full bodied, with moderate carbonation. Never had one like this before. I’m not sure it totally works but interesting to try.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Ughsmash (5823) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - APR 25, 2012
Bottled. Poured medium-deep brown with a short, tight-bubbled beige head. The aroma picked up slightly sour sherry, black cherry skins, and oak over chocolate and ashy black malts.. hops seemed to be broken down, which isn’t surprising considering its age. The flavor found similar stuff.. sour, dark vinous notes and ashy roast throughout.. grainy essence of earthy and citrus bitterness around.. finished sour with nondescript residual bitterness and belly warmth. Medium-bodied, sour, scratchy, and bitter on the palate.. the flow was OK at best.. I hear this was good, so hopefully I can try it again sometime.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 drunkenpolack (319) - Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA - FEB 10, 2012
Old Review from back in 2009 - Strong aroma of citrus, grassy, piney hops. Matching those hops was a rather large dose of alcohol. Sitting behind that is some lemon, chocolate, and roasted malt. Folks this is not a Pilsner. At least this is not a Pilsner like I’ve ever had.
Once again the taste is hoppy. Not as hoppy as it’s nose though. The alcohol once again plays a big part in this beer. I won’t say it got in the way but I will say it’s in there nicely. Roasted malt and chocolate are more up front here. Mouthfeel sits more on the medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of lamas. Poured deep brown with khaki head. Some solid rings of lace. Plums, raisins, and coffee in the nose. Flavor of sweet, roasty malts and coffee with vanilla notes. Resiny, dry finish. Thick body. ABV just slightly noticeable. My first beer from this style, a bit quirky.

Pitch black colour. Aroma has caramel and sweet malts, some hops also. Flavour has sweet roasted malts and caramel.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 DrSilverworm (1016) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - DEC 28, 2011
12oz bottle. Pitch-black color, minimal brown head. Very little lace. Looks like a stout, pretty much. Black is right. But this is not a stout. There’s no chocolate / coffee stoutness found here. The first thing is the bitterness -- this is bitter. Probably from the huge resiny hop flavor, with a licorice note. There is a bit of alcohol heat here, too. It’s a big brew for sure, really big body, but a nice light and crisp carbonation, and a good, long aftertaste. No complaints about the texture, it’s great. The flavor is powerful and assertive, but I’m not sure how much I can say that this brew is enjoyable and tasty. I mean, it’s great... but not something I would care to get on a regular basis, especially considering the $7 paid. It’s unique, certainly a good novelty and an interesting departure. Extra point for that. [Note: Found this bottle at Dutch’s last week -- had a white residue near the cap, definitely looks like it has been sitting in their walk-in cooler for quite a while.]
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 5000 (4104) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - NOV 26, 2011
Bottle:   Deep brown, nearly black, large foamy beige head, sticky lacing.   Has a slight Bourbony
vanilla nose.   Not what I expected.   Soft hop bite, a little black malt, softer Bourbon and Vanilla.
Hmmm... interesting.   Hop bite that lingers, with a little bit of a Black malt flavor.   Nose and start of
this beer suggests Bourbon and Vanilla, but doesn’t translate much onto the tongue.   If this is indeed a 10%
beer, it hides its ABV very well.   As it warms it gets a little hot, or should I say shows some heat.   Comes
across as a Black Bier with a minor hop bite, aged on Oak.   Interesting take on a Pilsner/Black Bier.   Not
have bad, better than I expected.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Oak lingers well after the finish.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Vignale (909) - Malmö, SWEDEN - AUG 28, 2011
