The infamous Clown King is in town, with his twisted circus of salaciousness. Ready to corrupt the senses, he’s brought together two show-stopping acts in a riot of flavour and aroma. In this two-ring extravaganza, an imperial pale ale and a barley wine come crashing together, and left standing in the sawdust is an American Barley Wine. This freak of nature might be red, but that’s where the similarities with a normal clown’s nose end - on Clown King’s nose you’ll find all the fun of the fair, with caramel and toasted marshmallow aromas, but also raisin and dried fruit. With toasty malt and sweet dark fruit flavours, and a smooth, chewy mouthfeel, you’ll be lulled into a false sense of security, before the Clown King springs up and flings a bucket of spicy, fruity hops right in your face. With such complexity and flavour packed in, like a tiny car full of clowns, you’ll soon be on your feet, joining in with the thunderous applause, when suddenly the Clown King is gone, leaving only a fleeting sense of warmth, and a desire to follow him onto the next town, where the show will begin all over again. - See more at: http://www.brewdog.com/product/clown-king#sthash.mOBuzOIO.dpuf

330ml bottle at home. BB 10/2018. dark amber hazy color. small off-white head. smells liqueurish, of wood, malty sweet, dried fruits, plums, alcoholic, some light citric notes, light coconuts, light note of oranges, honey. full body, soft carbonation, nice rather oily full mouthfeel. tastes surprisingly fruity and hoppy, oranges, pines, also some dried fruits, rather alcoholic / liqueurish but not unpleasant in combination with the fruit notes, rather malty sweet. finishes alcoholic and with fruit notes. rather boozy, but I like it, for the ABV its even kind of easy to drink.

Bottle. Dark amber with a slightly off-white head. Dark fruit, grain and alcohol aroma. Full caramel body with more fruits, almost rum soaked raisins, some booze but very balanced by the malts. A little sweet but holds together very well.

330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Willems & Zoon. BBF 15-10-18. Apparently retired according to RB – score since I love my barley wines with some age on them. Lightly hazy dark classical amber, little tanned head. Nose is very sweet malt syrup, caramelized apples, light herbal, thick honey cereal, thick burned sugar, light maple, syrupy herbal tea,… Taste is oxidized honey cereal caramelized apples, cooked apples are very thick, leaves, light herbal quality, feels quite classical, thick syrup, pleasant oxidation, strong wild flowers, faint bitterness, wild herbs, chamomile tea, thick low carbonation syrup, maple & herbal tea, sweet molten sugar & very thick nicely oxidized malts,… Quite herbal. Pleasant surprise for me. Nicely warming. Easily one of my favourite BrewDog beers so far, usually I am anything but a fan but sometimes they do score.

Bottle @ home. Aroma and flavour is thick caramel malt liquorice syrup. Some bitter fruity hop notes, but mostly malt sweetness. In a good barleywiney way. LRAB.

Pours deep copper colour with thin beige head that quickly disappears. Nose is fruity and toasty. First mouthfeel is huge sweetness and caramel, then toasted malts, dark fruits, spices and fruits aromas. Warm alcohol. Full body, low carbonation. Long alcoholic and sweet finish. Rather good, but not balanced enough : sweetness and alcohol are a bit overwhelming other tastes and aromas.
