COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
bottled and keg, special
The infamous Clown King is in town, with his twisted circus of salaciousness. Ready to corrupt the senses, he’s brought together two show-stopping acts in a riot of flavour and aroma. In this two-ring extravaganza, an imperial pale ale and a barley wine come crashing together, and left standing in the sawdust is an American Barley Wine. This freak of nature might be red, but that’s where the similarities with a normal clown’s nose end - on Clown King’s nose you’ll find all the fun of the fair, with caramel and toasted marshmallow aromas, but also raisin and dried fruit. With toasty malt and sweet dark fruit flavours, and a smooth, chewy mouthfeel, you’ll be lulled into a false sense of security, before the Clown King springs up and flings a bucket of spicy, fruity hops right in your face. With such complexity and flavour packed in, like a tiny car full of clowns, you’ll soon be on your feet, joining in with the thunderous applause, when suddenly the Clown King is gone, leaving only a fleeting sense of warmth, and a desire to follow him onto the next town, where the show will begin all over again. - See more at: http://www.brewdog.com/product/clown-king#sthash.mOBuzOIO.dpuf

Pours red, minimal head that dissipates quickly, aroma of caramel, some resinous hops. Full bodied, oily feel, soft carbonation, Taste is more caramel, with some raisins and berries. Good strong bitterness and the required heavy cloying sweetness that comes with a Barley Wine. The reviews so far seem a little harsh, as a 12% US style Barley Wine it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Its not the best Barley wine I’ve ever had, and It may not be the most balanced beer, but it doesn’t need to be! An interesting brew, would recommend to those wanting some kick from their beer.

Brewdog tasting @ Viisi Penniä. Copper color, off-white head. Classic barley wine aroma with sweet and fruity notes. Juicy malts, oak and hops dominate the flavor. Very full body, medium-light carbonation. Nice for the style.

AMAZING fruity aroma and when i say amazing i mean it! It smells like dense fruit syrup. Minimal head but no surprise with that much %. Very sweet in taste, extremely fruity. Then goes caramel and serious note of alcohol. Be careful. Low drinkability. Beer for sipping. Sweetness is balanced by american hops but is still dominant. Sweet and alcohol finish. Impressive beer!

Bottled, Full 33cl sample. The aroma has dried fruits, sugar/caramel, tropical fruits, pine. Clear, brown coloured beer with a medium, off-white head. The taste is moderate sweet, light-moderate bitter, has the malty dried fruitiness, (raisin/caramel), tropical hop fruits. Sticky palate. Nice, very nice.

Backlog rating. Keg at BD Shoreditch, London. It pours a clean dark orange color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is sweet and juicy with notes of resinous hops and tropical fruits. Taste is quite sweet with toffee, caramel, biscuit, mango, pine cones, citrus. Finishes bitter and slightly boozy. Medium to full bodied with good carbonation. Overall, ok American style barley wine

Bottle at home split with Sarah picked up at Brewdog online. Deep orange / amber red coloured pour with a loose sticky cream colored head. Aroma is clean sweet caramel with nice raisin and dried fruit. A little bit of booze on the nose, but it is pretty mellow and blends in well with some of the fruity notes. Flavour is full sticky caramel honey malts, with mellow dried fruit, unrefined sugars and a hint of liquorice. Palate is sticky full bodied and viscous on the tongue. Lingering sweet malts and mellow dried fruit and strawberry. Really enjoyable barley wine, hints the abv oh so well and isn’t cloying.
