3.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Encountered in the Ship and Castle in Aberystwyth.
Up to this point we had been supping Erdinger and freedom brewery’s Ubu and Wild Goose like they were going out of fashion, setting the tone to be very much a Teutonic/pint with assorted hedge cuttings within type affair.
Craving something to cut through the cream like malty wheat-fest of proceedings thus far, I clocked the unassuming Dead Pony Club snuggled between some radioactive looking VK and San Miguel.
Up to now, I have been partly terrified of Brewdog’s offerings. With a penchant for paint blistering abv’s and a most unfortunate first contact in a room temperature bottle of Punk IPA during my undergrad days, I had tended to steer towards my beloved European offerings and anything Wychwood could throw in the public domain.
More fool me.
On a gamble and a desperate need for hops, I took the plunge and opted for the Celt. And my word what a win. At a extremely suppable 3.8, this hop hand grenade immediately threw citrus, pine and the essence of sheer vibrance in my hooter, demanding an immediate and very un-connoisseur like gulp.
On the palette Dead Pony Club continues the citric theme with an incredibly grapefruity bittersweet taste, the hop elements immediately forthright with a smooth transition to an dry finish, practically begging another sip.
The body is difficult to comment as this superseded an erdinger, understandably the pint of liquid weetabix still dominating the mouth feel palette.
Overall? As you can probably gather this wee Beastie of a bottle did not last long, a superbly refreshing beer, the bittersweet flavour profile perfectly suited for either a sumer scorcher refresher or a low abv counter-foil to creamy curries.
A winner in my books, happy supping!

(33 cl bottle from Saveur Bière; Batch #273; BBD: August 24th 2013) Pours a mostly clear amber with medium, white head. Decent retention, good lace and ample regeneration. Aroma is succulent fruity hops with notes of grapefruit and pine. Oily texture, medium carbonation, medium body and a short, slightly bitter finish. Flavour follows the aroma. Quite sessionable and tasty. Doesn’t seem imbalanced despite the hop-forward profile and the low abv. A strong contender in my favourite style but to truly judge it fairly the beer - and thus the hops - need to be fresher.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Fruity and well-hopped. Hints of champagne, lemon and immature apples, with a very good bitter aftertaste. Sour, similar to Punk IPA by the same brewery; however the bitterness is slightly less distinct. Smells like it tastes. I have to find out if this is available in Norway somewhere.
The beer is unassuming when you don’t pay attention to it; which I am not sure whether is a good thing or a bad thing.

Bottled. Looks like honey, small white head. Aroma is a bit weaker than than in ipa. The taste is amazing, with a nice bitter finish. Not bad!

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Amber with a white head. Aroma of grapefruit, kumquat, pine. Light bodied. A little light toffee sweetness just just enough to balance punchy citrus. There’s a little mango and gooseberry there and some pine. Bitterness is solid, but no more than needed. Hops are fine and are not baldly presented, but it’s otherwise empty.
