3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Smurf2055 (138) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JAN 20, 2012
Pours ruby, head leaves very quickly. Very faint smell. Balanced and fruity with a prickly sensation. Sits well. Bit of a boozy taste. I wasn’t blown away by it, but it’s pretty good.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Dixonian (924) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JAN 12, 2012
Bottle - 2010 vintage.
Cloudy amber pour with a sparse off-white head. Grassy hops, peat, toffee, and oak aromas. Doesn’t taste as good as it smells - smokey and malty with some citrus and caramel.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 ryanfolty (586) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JAN 7, 2012
Date: January 7, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: Binnys Description: Opaque muddy brown with slight head. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel mixed with some whiskey / alcohol. Taste is very sweet caramel with a slight alcohol finish. Smooth and syrupy with medium body. Just too sweet for me, not worth the steep price but got the rating so it’s all good. Batch 243, bottled 7/5/09.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 neuromatt (610) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 14, 2011
Batch 243, bottled 07/05/09. 33 cL bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, served in a snifter. Pours hazy mahogany with a small tan head that fades quickly to a thin remnant, leaving behind minimal lace. On the nose, there are notes of molasses, caramel, oak, whisky, herbs and earth. The flavour is very sweet throughout with complex toasted malts, molasses and caramel. There are subtle herbal, hoppy notes that emerge at the midpoint and build towards a long, balanced finish. Oak is present throughout, along with subtle whisky notes. On the palate, it is medium in body with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a great barley wine with a great malt backbone and subtle whisky notes. A great beer to savour. 2011-12-14
4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 DrSilverworm (703) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - DEC 6, 2011
11.2 oz bottle, shared. Bottled 7/5/09. Dark, complex amber color, really nice and varied. Nice gradients in the color of the appearance. Almost completely hazy, lots of floating sediment. No head, but I love how this brew looks. Incredibly complex aroma, so delicious. The texture is unbelievable, 2.5 years must have really done wonders for this brew. Barely any carbonation at all. Great sweet taste. Aroma is hard to describe... complex, but not overpowering. Super smooth malty-heavy taste, nice super-smooth sweet hops taste. Alcohol barely discernible at all. So good. I wish I had more of this, five and a half oz is not nearly enough to figure this beer out. So smooth and easy to drink, can’t emphasize that enough. T loved it as well, she said it was a "15/10". I guess this is what a barleywine is supposed to taste like.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jhamp9 (160) - Texas, USA - DEC 6, 2011
Poured a murky brown with almost no head. Aroma is mostly whiskey with a hint of brown sugar. Taste caramel sweetness, nice maltiness, and the alcohol in the nose is only slightly noticeable in the finish. Silky mouthfeel. Batch #243.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 oldrtybastrd (3228) - Doha, Qatar/Great Falls, Montana, USA - NOV 13, 2011
This is one big ASS beer. Pours a nice deep dark golden brown. Aromas of hay, hop flowers, carmel malts, candy sugar, honey. Flavor: oak, caramel malts, grapefruit, light hops, brown sugar, and alcohol
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Brigadier (1837) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - NOV 7, 2011
12 ounce bottle
Better than the sum of its parts this was hiding in the back of the cellar. Having morphed into an interesting old ale the combination of efforts from BrewDog and Mikkeller result in a strong beer that definitely is not forgettable. It might even be worth the high price tag if you can still find it.
Aroma / Appearance - The ambient ruby red body glows with a warmth that comes from more than the alcohol. Long clear legs sldie down the sides like sheets of clear ice. Brown sugar, malts, polished mahogany siding, and the smell of an antique shop cling in the air like a cloud. The alcohol warms even the air.
Flavor / Palate - The full warm resiny mouthfeel coats the tongue in ethanol and brown sugar. Black cherries, dense mountains of hardwood ready to be stacked for firewood, and musty books are heavy on the palate. The mouthfeel isn’t cloying but is not exactly delicate either. This one still has life in it and should be good for a few years to come.
