Bottle at ChrisOís Pre-GBBF Shindig 2011. Pours a slightly cloudy brown with a foam head. Huge pine nose with notes of earth and grapefruit. Great, sweet flavor, nice roastiness, juicy hops, light cocoa. Medium bodied, oily, with average carbonation. Slightly sticky finish, rindy citrus hops, pine, good roasted malts. Delicious.

A Mes rate. At Chris Oís pre GBBF.
Deep dark brown with a thin beige film topping. Big grassy fresh hop snout that is actually really good. The flavour is a little too coffee dominated but it still works really well. A lick of toffee at the edges. Just a little too malty for it to really sing but yeah, best beer Iíve had from BrewDog in a while.

On keg at the BrewDog Bar, Edinburgh. A black beer with a lacy tan head. Fruity, hoppy nose, quite sweet with roasted malt also. Passionfruit and mango hop flavours are balanced nicely with the roasted malt, toast and bitter chocolate malt character. Nicely bitter with a floral, malty finish. Foamy mouth-feel. Very nice!

Keg at BrewDog Edinburgh. Black beer, big lacy beige head. Bitter coffee & fruit notes on the nose - mango, passionfruit, burnt toast. Almost sweet to start but deceptive - big coffee ground notes mixed with big citrus and a burnt toasty finish. Really interesting.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2012 Not so keen on this now.....
Original rating done 24/07/11 (16/20) Bottle from BrewDog.
Appearance - Black / very dark brown....2 finger frothy tan white head. Good, soft carbonation.
Aroma - Strong piney and citrus hops, resin, roasted malts.
Taste - Initially tangy, slighty sour pine hops, citrus, then backbone of roasted malts comes through with some plain chocolate, bit of coffee. Donít notice the oak chips. More emphasis on the hops than the stouty background in other Black IPAs. It gets better as you drink it.
Palate - Again, tangy mouthfeel - the soft carbonation is just right with a juicy pine / citrus bitter hop long lingering finish (Re-rated from 4 to 3 - the palate Iím finding a little harsh)
Overall - I personally prefer a bit more of a stout background and more grapefruity hop in a Black IPA. This is more of a Double IPA / Black IPA hybrid.

Keg@ the new Glasgow BrewDog bar. Mild treacle hop aroma. Almost black colour, not much head. Dry bitter coffee hop flavour. Bitter aftertaste. Not my favourite black IPA.

Keg at the Rake. It pours darkest brown with a thin beige head and moderate carbonation. The nose is black jack sweets, caramel, bubblegum, sweaty sock and resin. The taste is caramel, charcoal, chocolate, grass, hay, bubblegum sweetness, pine, molasses and salted liquorice, with a bitter-dry finish. Medium body and well hidden alcohol. A really flavoursome black IPA. Nice work Brewdog and Equity Punks.
