Say hello to Ghost Deer. A defiant and irreverent, devil may care, supersonic bitch of a beer. Ghost Deer is a 28% fermented beer, the strongest ever fermented beer which is only ever served from a single handcrafted and authentic deer’s head.

The beer itself is a robust 28% blonde ale. After fermentation it is aged for 6 months in some amazing whisky, bourbon, rum and sherry barrels. There is only one Ghost Deer head and this beer will only ever be available on draft, served in a stemmed glass, direct from the mouth of the deer himself.

You know that you’ve turned into a beer ticking geek when you share a 6cl (yes 6cl) bottle with 5 other guys. This is what happened on 23rd Aug 2014 at the Midlands meeting. My 1cl was lovely, I like sweet strong brews so this was just right for me. A novelty beer really I suppose, glad I’ve had a sip but not sure I should be pontificating about a beer I’ve had so little of: just a tick really. Scored highly because I can.

Bottle @ Midlands Bottle Share, very kindly shared by Rich. Pours deep amber with a sweet boozy aroma. Taste continues sweet with warming alcohol, candi sugar and perhaps the slightest hint of rum & caramel. Quite nice, just wish I had a full bottle myself for a proper taste.

Very weird barley wine coming out of a ridiculous little bottle of 5 cl (or tapped from a reindeer’s head...). Could be, as they claim, the strongest beer in the world reaching an astonishing 28% ABV by fermentation alone, but the ageing on different liquor barrels certainly added to this. Litterally no head, like an unblended lambic, but looking more like a glass of cognac, with a very warm, beautiful copper colour, cristal clear. Extremely powerful, intoxicating and complexely structured aroma of any good spirit, reminiscent of brown rhum, figues in ’jenever’, calvados, honey, raisins, sweet white wine, pepper, cognac, whisky and candy. Equally powerful, almost agressive taste, very sweet but in a liqueurish kind of way, like orange liqueur, oily mouthfeel but not too sticky, cinnamon, amaretto, rhum, noble character with huge complexity and inevitably lots of warming alcohol in the finish, but much less wry than I feared, as in the best of single malts. Very remote from what most people understand as being ’beer’ but anyone capable of enjoying high-quality spirits next to beer, should be thrilled by something like this. I will never forget this experience and it only confirms Brewdog’s reputation as one of the most progressive and creative breweries in the Old World.

Bottle, 6cl, bb 1.3.2015. Pours dark golden with no head whatsoever. Aroma is oak, kandi and dried fruit as well as alcohol, vinous herbs, wine grapes and cognac. Full body without carbonation. Flavour is sweet with oak barrels, alcohol, juniper, anise and kandi, giving a herby sweetly alcoholic finish.
