Ingredients: Maris Otter, Crystal malt, Caramalt; Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe hops. Dry Hops: Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe. IBU 150
This little bottle has a grandiloquent story to tell. 2,204 malted Maris Otter grains gave all they had to offer the world to provide the robustly delicate toffee malt canvas for the ensuing epic. 6 Hop Cones willingly sacrificed themselves in fiery cauldron that is our brew kettle to ensure your mouth is left feeling punished and puckering for more. 9,900,000,000 yeast cells frantically fermented their little hearts out as the sugars were magically turned into alcohol in the dark depths of our fermentation tanks. This explicit ale has more hops and bitterness that any other beer brewed in the UK. This is an extreme beer rollercoaster for freaks, gypsies and international chess superstars.

Note this is for the new petrol blue coloured labels with white lettering, which is 9.2%. Ratings for the older bottles with with bright blue label and black lettering should go under the first edition.

750ml: Pours a cloudy ruby/orange with a large fluffy off-white head, earthy hops mixed with oranges in the aroma, starts and ends bitter with a long orange aftertaste. Full bodied, slick mouthfeel, playful carbonation. A nice break from American DIPAs.

Amber body with a nice white head. Aroma of hops and citrus. Medium bodied, nice carbonation. Big massive taste of bitter hops. Also had nice citrus notes and spices. Bitter finish that lasted forever and had a nice alcoholic kick. Tasty and refreshing. Fantastic!!

Oh, BrewDog. I want to like your beers, but you aren’t making it easy. This one is just too malty with a huge turpentine kick standing in for more delicate hop notes. The aroma seemed pretty good when I uncapped the bottle, but, once the beer hit the glass, things went downhill. The aroma is paint thinner, pine resin and too much caramel malt. The beer looks nice enough, but that’s not much of an accomplishment, to be honest. The flavor is over-sweet with sticky malt sugars and the hops lack complexity. This beer needs a water chaser just to get the film off my teeth. I’m not trying to say its awful, but it’s absolutely not how I like my DIPAs. Pine resin lingers in the aftertaste, which would be nice but the cloying caramel flavor kills it. Booze, turpentine hops and sticky malt is a poor combination. I guess I’ll stick to the Paradox series.

This poured a clear orange with a generous two fingers of foam. Aroma has some strong citrus and sweet malts. The taste up front has a good bit of citrus but even more spice. The aftertaste becomes rather sweet and fruity, with almost a hint of dark fruit. Alcohol also comes through a bit as well, though overall quite well hidden. A very thoroughly enjoyable double ipa.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Batch 62, ABV is 9.2%. Orange colour, big to moderate off-white head. Very nice aroma of fruity (mainly citrussy) and piney American hops. Also notes of crystal or caramel malts. The flavour has loads of piney hops throughout, with a substantial bitterness, on a fairly sweet malty background. Hints of tomcat. Not "well balanced", but what do you expect from an imperial IPA?
