The devastatingly bitter finish will drill straight through your taste buds. If you like hops and bitterness then go ahead. But be warned: this beer has more bitterness than a human palate (or nipple) can detect. For freaks, craft beer junkies and stamp collectors only.

The second placed beer in our 2012 Prototype Challenge is a BrewDog staff favourite, and made a brief guest appearance in our bars last summer.

This beer pours a light cloudy colour with a small white head which disappears quickly. The aroma is of citrusy, floral hops, with grapefruit being particularly prominent. The taste starts off fruity but as the beer hits the back of your mouth bitterness takes over. Dry, drawn out bitter finish with a slightly unpleasant aftertaste. Based on aroma and initial taste alone this beer would be an amazing IPA, however, the finish is just to intense.

GoufCustom (795) - HONG KONG - MAY 17, 2014

330 ml bottle “Batch 032” bought at The Bottle Shop in Sai Kung.

Looks: Cloudy hazy amber colour with dusty yeast particles; Razor-thin head and residual soapy white foam which fades in 15 seconds. Small sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and quite refreshing grapefruit, with passion fruit, pineapple, light jackfruit, sugar, pine, resin, ale malt, lemon and pissy grass.

Taste: Medium sweet ale malt, with strong grapefruit zest, orange, strong pine, resin, molasses, dry biscuits, light earth, strong bitter lime, very strong bitter hops and sharp grass.

Body: Medium body. Slick, bitter and slightly oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: Moderate ale malt with dominating bitterness, which is massive, say a couple steps stronger than those of German Pils but still manage to be quite tasty. Good zesty grapefruit and orange. Piney, resiny but too oozy. Dry biscuit and slight earth to round up. Interesting…

Hoppiness: Fragrant grapefruit and tropical fruits, light cat-piss Simcoe, strong pine and lemon in aroma. Zesty citrus, pine, bitter lime sharp grassy taste. Bitterness is very strong, sharp but not harsh, for a lasting and quite tasty strong bitter finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Strong bitter and piney to mouth.

Comments: This one sells insane bitterness, but actually its aroma shines more, with that unmistakable Simcoe cat-piss and nice tropical fruits. Its hops is strong bitter, tolerable to experienced IPA lovers, sharp, quite intense but not really refreshing or mindblowing. A lack of nice head and carbonation also make it less attractive. A good and interesting Hoppy exercise nevertheless.

DWG; Pours clear golden with a mostly fading off-white head. Aroma is malt, caramel, lots of citrus fruits, some tropic and light cat pee. Taste is light sweet and moderate too full bitter, mostly bitter lasting. Body is medium, texture is oily to creamy, carbonation is soft.

Pours crystal clear amber with a frothy white head that lasts a little short. Aroma shouts out loads of citrus such as grapefruit and floral notes such as grass, some tobacco in hidden inn the sub notes. Taste is perfect with a medium sweet start with a bitterness that explodes in the mouth and leaves a dry feeling in the mouth. Great IPA!

Gul/oransje med lavt skum. Aroma av sitrus og annen tropisk frukt. Grapefrukt? Smaker mye det samme som aromaen+malt. Relativt bitter sak dette her, med fruktige innslag. Litt flat, altså lite kullsyre. Bitter ettersmak.

Bottle, 330 ml. Pours clear orange/golden colour with around a half finger of soapy white head which dissipates quickly. Aroma of hops, hops, more hops, citrus and pine forests. Initial huge bitter attack on the tounge gives way to a dark caramel malty underbody, with notes of aforementioned citrus fruits and of course the significant hop presence. Bitterness rises again on the finish, particularly in the back of the throat, though possibly a little too much for my personal taste. However that aside this is a quality IPA.

Bottle @ home. Aroma is huge fruity hops, like huge, some caramel as well. Flavour is hugely bitter punching fruity and earthy hops, some malt sweetness to back it up but the finish is all hops again. Does what it promises.
