Bottled, occasional
Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

Bottle from Systembolaget, part of Brewdog Mix 4-pack for 101 SEK, which is good value for the money. Dark beer with aroma and taste of malt, chocolate, coffe, and a lot of hops. Good balance! Black IPA, but not as hop dominant as normal Brewdog IPAs.

Sehr dunkelbraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch röstmalzig, Kaffee, Schokolade, fruchtig hopig. Geschmack röstmalzig, schokoladig, Kaffee, fruchtig bitter.

Fruity and sweet on the nose. Very dark with small tan head. Little bit fruity, bubblegumish but all in all bitter. Interesting mix of aromas.

Ah, thanks to Nova Runda’s Marko for splitting this with me at the Magic Beer Room. Blackish dark brown body with a small off white head. A blast, slightly dank, of Simcoe, slightly roasty. Nice gum notes. Grainy, sweetish taste, again with the hop delivering its goods. Ending with a nicely roasty note. Very, very good.

Awesome. That's all that needs to be said! 7.2% and one of the nicest beers ever!

The appearance had a dark brown more so closer to a black colored body with a half fingered white foamy head that quickly dies leaving barely a filmy lacing coating the glass. The smell has some bitter piney hops up in front and leading to a decent coating of malts, but not overbearing. The taste is bittersweet; and you kinow what, that’s exactly what an American Black Ale should lead to, good job Bew Dog. There’s no aftertaste and there’s a slightly bitter dry finish. The palate feels about a medium but sometimes feels lighter and then sometimes feels heavier, unsure where this is going. Carbonation is not as harsh as expected as some American Black Ales can be. Overall, hey try it and see how it goes for you; for me its absolutely fine, there’s nothing wrong with it.

33cl bottle Appearance: Black with a medium sized grey head. Aroma: fruity hops, with nice toasted and roasted malts. Taste: Fruity hops and roasted malts taking it to sweet (purple) wine gum teritory before further bitterness kicks in Finish is dry but suprisingly salty and light chocolate tones show up in the finish. Aftertaste is a slightly salty chocolate bitterness forms the aftertaste. low carbonation, medium body, The expectations were high, but this does more as I was expecting. Great black IPA.

Pours black. Aroma is hoppy and malty. Taste is mildly sweet like licorice then a mildly bitter aftertaste.

Pours out black with a small brown head. Some nice smelling pine hop aroma, but fairly faint. Flavor is a muted mix of roasted malt along with hops that shift a little towards the citrus side of the spectrum. Imagine dry hopping a somewhat thicker Guinness. Hedonically it’s a good beer on its own, but pales in comparison to every other Black IPA/Cascadian Ale/Black Ale/ I’ve had.

Darkest Cola brown, thin ringed and swirl of filmy tan head. Bursts of ashen pine, harmless honeyed hops and milky clambering lychee. Initial taste of muddied malt, choc and a galloping roastedness. Back stabbing bitterness, held together by a creamy Simcoe sweetness in the middle leaning towards a Dulche Deleche toasted caramelisation. Almost too clean on the finish, lightly squidgy soapy bitterness and a steely smoky linger.
This is much better than I recall from a time when I was sure Black IPAs were the answer to my beer budget concerns #TwoBurdsWanStone but they’ve smoothed and sweetened this up without losing any of the swatches of refreshment.
