Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

330ml bottle from Archive Beer a Boutique 200513. Dark and black with a mountain of thick tan foam. Strong citrus hop aroma with a mouth warming hop flavour tat carries hints of vanilla and liquorice in the background. You can taste the alcohol.

Draft sample. Poured black color with an average frothy tan head that lasted and produced good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt, dark earthy hop aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good but not a standout beer.

Almost Jet Black color with beige persistent head. Hoppy and fruity aroma, citric hints are present, together with roasted malts. Taste is dry and hoppy and resiny, with caramel, chocolate, roasted malts, coffee and a peristent bitter finish.

Bottle from State Line. Pours hazy and thick blackish with big 3-finger tan head. Nose is huge floral and blackberry notes, Simcoe hops. Tastes rich, very fruity in a blackberry sense, with big malt, fruity notes, and citra hops, plus sweet black currant flavor late. This one is delicious, and complex, and I’d love a sixer, please! This one is on another level as a black IPA.

Draft. Pours deep brown with a beige head. Medium roasted malts, almost some charred/burnt notes, with some moderate grassy hoppy bitterness. Not bad.

Draft at Dutch’s. Pours dark brown to black in color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee notes, earthy and resiny hops, dry, decent bitterness but not crazy bitter, decent drinker that held up pretty well in transit.

Thanks jlthiessen for this beauty. Pours a beautiful black with creamy mocha head. Aromas of dank hops and coffee with notes of chocolate. Flavors follow suit. A benchmark black IPA.

Pour out of 12 oz bottle, dark black pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of nice grapefruit, roast, coffee, chocolate, hints of dark fruit, slight spice, yeast. Taste is a mix of grapefruit, roast, coffee, cocoa, hints of slight pine, grass, chocolate, finishing slightly bitter.
