Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

330 ml bottle “Batch no. 321” bought at The Bottle Shop in Sai Kung.

Looks: Opaque black with no yeast sediments; Half finger head and beige foam which fades in 40 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant and refreshing grapefruit, with light passion fruit, strong pine, resin, molasses, malt, light roast, lime and sharp grassy hops.

Taste: Medium sweet dark roasted malt, with very strong grapefruit zest, strong pine, nuts, molasses, light biscuits, light earth, strong lime and sharp bitter grassy hops.

Body: Full body. Rich, oily and oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: A full-blitz of Simcoe hops onto a pretty rich, dark roast malty body. Strong grapefruit zest and sharp grass dominate, but the dark malt is strong enough you can feel the nuttiness and Munich’s Ale taste. The strong pine, resin and light earth balance the sweetness effectively. The 7.2% booze is almost unnoticeable. Excellent!

Hoppiness: Very fragrant and refreshing grapefruit, light passion fruit, strong pine and resin aromas. Strong citrus zest, strong pine and ooze, light earth, strong lime and sharp grassy taste. Bitterness is sharp, strong and smart for a lasting and tasty strong bitter finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Rich, fruity and nicely bitter to mouth.

Comments: The poster boy of the style, what’s more can I say? Its Simcoe attack is a labour of love, and has a pretty strong dark roasty malt body to back it up. More hoppy than Stout-y, this one has a big heart to please, and it’s so pleasing to enjoy. Highly recommended!

Noticable, citric, grapefruity, resinous hoppiness, very pungent, soft licorice and light cocoa and coffee, ABV well integrated. Black colour, medium head, good amount of lacing. Medium bite, noticably sweet, salty and very hoppy. Medium bodied, bitter and salty finish. Great!

330ml bottle. Goblet glass @Tot Begut (Sant Boí –Barcelona). Very dark brown color. Beige foam shows fairly good retention. Intense aromas of caramel malts, resins & pine. Creamy upfront & roasted malt flavor. Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Viscous texture & malty dried sensation. Sharp bitterness but solid caramelized malty backbone are touched by subtle spicy & dark cocoa hues. Long bitter finish. Slight wood on the aftertaste. Refreshing & nice spot of the Style.

Bottle shared with wyzzywyz22. Poured a nearly black dark brown with a small to medium beige head. Aroma is strongly hopped, some chocolate malts, hint of rubber and herbs. Flavour is sweet chocolate, nice fat dollop of juicy hops. Very nice. Good black IPA.

Dark and roasty, assertively hopped, medium to full bodied. Slight dark fruit and toasty sweet malt backbone. Bitterness lingers on the tongue after each sip. Slight alc flavor in the finish as well as coffee and roasted malt flavors.

Bottle, 355ml. Pours an opaque black colour with a reddish hue and a creamy brown head. Aroma is dominated by the hoppinnes, with a touch of roasted malt, a combination that is probably just the best idea a brewer ever had right? Very smooth and drinkable. Well balanced, with some intense hopping matched by it’s formidable toasted character. I love this style.

Lots of tropical fruit in the aroma. Smooth, silky taste. Initial fruity, fresh hoppy flavours. The stout-like dry, roasty bitterness comes through nicely in the aftertaste.
