COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled, occasional
Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours near black with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a combination of musty dark grain and pine with a bit of roast backing. Flavor is similar with pine and dark grains backed by roast and a hint of bitterness.

Black with dark brown ale. Mild aroma of smoked ham. Smoke, smoked fish, mild malt with sweet bitter chockolate aftertaste. High in carbon.

Bottle from Rhythm and Booze, Ripon. Pour almost black with a fading tan head. Very hoppy with pine notes dominating. They pretty much over ride the malt notes with just a hint of burnt toast coming through. Very tasty still but could be better balanced.

Marstonlad (331) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAR 4, 2014
Bottle from Alko, Helsinki. A nearly black color with a medium-sized, dense white head. Aroma of strong fruitiness and grassiness, roasty notes do not appear very much. Fruitiness is fresh, even a bit tropical. Taste is rich and balanced; the smooth, medium to full bodied palate makes this delightfully drinkable. Bitterness is medium to heavy and rises towards the finish. Grass and spruce are prominent, also some lingering roasted malty notes, but on the whole, not very much. This was very rich and delicious to drink, but maybe not as varied as some black IPAs around - very hop-oriented, this one.

Bottle. Almost black, nice beige head. Great pure hoppy aroma. You canclose your eyes and be sure that youíre drinking an AIPA. Same in taste, balanced, could be more bitter. Drinkable. Compared it with my homebrewed black ale. Two great beers.

11.2 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a very dark brown color; itís very close to being completely opaque, but not quite there. There isnít much head, sadly - just one finger high with a mocha shade. Even with a small head, retention isnít very good. It does leave a bit of lacing on the glass, at least. S: This one combines a mildly roasted background with lemony, spicy Centennial hops, and actually does it well. The more I sniff on this, the more that I notice that itís the hoppiness thatís in the background rather than the roast. Aromatically - while itís not explosively bold - it isnít far off from Wookey Jack, and I consider that very high praise. T: Roasty, roasty, roasty, did I mention roasty yet? Its hop profile is definitely in the background, though it definitely comes through in the finish with notes of pine, grapefruit, and maybe some lemon. This works better than a few black ales/hoppy porters Iíve had, but the malt/hop transition is jarring at times. M: Itís well carbonated, while the finish balances between sweet and dry. This one goes down pretty easy because of its slender feel and slight sharpness. O: Itís a really nice black ale, but Iím not sure Iíd buy it again given its inflated price. Actually, it isnít that hideously expensive by import/BrewDog standards, so actually, itís more a freshness thing that makes me hesitate a future purchase. Iíd definitely give it a second chance on tap, though.

Bottle 33 CL. Pours black brown with nice brown frothy head and a fruity scent. Notes of roasted nuts, dark and light chocolate, coffee, fruits, hops, grapefruit, pines. Intense flavors in this. Feels like a porter at the start but with much fruityer tones. Interesting and very tasty brew.

330ml bottle from Nelson Wines, Merton. Pours black with off white head that maintains for longer than expected. Chocolate, fruits and malt aromas. Smooth finish but with some gentle carbonations. Fantastic beer - instantly ordered a few more bottles from BrewDog.

Aroma is pine, dark malts and spices bordering on heat/vegetables. The flavor is dark malts, light grapefruit, strong spiciness and a tangy/bitter finish.
