Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

Bottle, 0.33l. Clear, black colour with big, lasting beige head and nice lacing. Low carbonation. Aroma of roasted malts, coffe and liquorice. Taste follows the aroma with hints of dark chocolate and hops. Overall great beer.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears pitch black and completely opaque in the glass with a one finger off-white head that quickly settles into thick, lasting ring. Good retention with streaks of soapy lace left behind. Robust, deeply roasted dark malt aroma that’s countered by sweeter dessert-like notes. Surprisingly, the nose is severely lacking in hop character which is really odd and disappointing for the style. I’m struggling to pick up any hops at all and wouldn’t have been able to guess it was an American Black Ale if sampled blind. Slightly smokey with gourmet coffee bean, oatmeal and dark chocolate countered by caramel, toffee, fudge and bakers chocolate. Smells okay and not offensive in any way but doesn’t live up to expectations. On the fuller end of medium body with subtle earthy hop bitterness countered by very strong malt flavors. There’s a bit of earthy pine and resinous oils but like the aroma, the hop character is overpowered by the prominent malt bill. Slightly smokey with robust, roasted coffee bean flavor along with hints of burnt toast, oatmeal, charcoal and bittersweet dark chocolate. Dry and bitter but not harsh, acrid or overwhelming. The bitter roast is cut mid-palate by lighter malt sweetness with hints of silky chocolate, caramel and toffee. The ABV is well masked and it’s light enough to drink easily, I just wish that it had more of a hop presence to balance out the malt flavors. It drinks more like a slightly bitter porter than an American Black Ale. Not bad, but not what I’m looking for in this style.

330ml brown bottle. Deep brown colour with a light brown head, thin and creamy bead. Aromas of bitter chocolate, earth and hops. Taste bitter choclate, roast. Dry with choclate notes in the finish and late bitterness and citrus. The body is slightly thin. Nice.

It pours black with a dark brown head. It has aromas of roasted malts, a bit of chocolate, and floral hops. It has flavors that highlight the roasted malts with the initial flavor and then are complimented with hints of chocolate, floral, and grapefruit flavors. It is moderately bitter with a hint of sweetness on the palate.

Appearance: clear deep brown with one fat finger of fluffy tan head, excellent retention and moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: pine, citrus, floral, roasty malt, bitter cocoa. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet and moderately strong bitter. (8/10) Palate: medium body, moderate carbonation, smooth but lingering and building bitter finish. (4/5) Very nice example of the style. Leads out with pine and citrusy hops that are strong but not overwhelming. Malting is quite smooth, with character but no astringency from the roasted malt. Dangerously easy-drinking for a 7%-er. (16/20)

Bottle from NB Liquor. Dark, dark, dark mahogany with a small dark khaki head that leaves tight lace. String citrus and pine nose with coffee and chocolate taking a secondary role. Big bitterness from citrus and chocolate with a light balanced sweetness. Medium creamy mouth with average carbonation. Very hop forward black IPA. Excellent
