Bottled, occasional
Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

BB 01/0715. Poured an opaque black with a slight mahogany edge and a one-finger light tan foamy head that retained very well and laced well. No visible carbonation. Aroma subtly of floral hops and hints of malt; overall disappointing. Taste very sweet with dark chocolate and coffee plus slightly roasted grain and a slight bitterness; alcohol well hidden. Medium body. Creamy, soft, smooth with a lingering quite bitter finish. Very nice.

33 bottle, Brewdog Bar, Sheffield. Jet black, very little head. Strong coffee and resin aroma. Flavour of cocoa and celery, coffee and pine resin on the finish. Great.

Appearance is almost jet black, no light escaping, a thin beige covering. Aroma- hoppy, fruity, pineapple juice, grapefruit, malty. Taste- exactly like a mix between an IPA and a stout/porter. Grapefruit and orange, piney hops, balanced with dark malts, slight roast, caramel biscuit, coffee and dark chocolate. Very good.

Dunkelbraun mir roten Reflexen, hellbriger funky Schaum. Blumig-fruchtige Hopfenaromen: Grapefruit, Kiefernharz, Süssholz? Röstmalzig-bitter, dann feine süsse, leicht cremig und vollmundig. Mittel Co2, krine Säure. Malzig, süss-bitter im Abgang. Feines Bier!

330ml bottle from Beer Dock, Crewe. Pours black ruby with a tan head. Very aromatic, hops in yer face. Roast, citrus, mouth sensation. Very easy drinking for it’s strength.

Beautiful black, orange, red colour, very nice hoppy nose with loads of grapefruit and flowers. The biterness is very well balanced. Finish is though a bit weak. Quite close to the Belgian Stouterik but hoppier...

33cl bottle. Very strong, juicy aroma of citrus, herbs, lots of resin. Really stunning. Black with small tan head. Taste is very refreshing, with nice balance of sweetness and huge bitterness. Roasted notes are very delicate, so this beer tastes almost like pale beer.

11.2 oz. bottle, consumed on 1-3-15. Labeled “27-02-15,” presumably a best by date of February 27, 2015. Pours vastly overcarbonated with way too much head, for which I will subtract a point both for appearance and in the overall score. The head is uneven, long-lasting, and has a pleasant taupe color. Excellent lacing. Ordinary for the style, dark brown appearance. This would be a very good-looking beer if there weren’t way too much head. Fresh, roasted malt aroma like overcooked bread right out of the oven. Yeasty aroma features a dark chocolate scent. Bitter taste of roasted malts. I would say there’s a coffee-like flavor, but I hate coffee, and this tastes good. Piney hops over tasty roasted malts. The malty flavor reminds me of a very rich, very dark chocolate cake. I actually experience quite a bit of alcohol burn, which is surprising given the not outstandingly high ABV of 7.2%. Medium body. Soft and smooth in the palate. Strangely watery and not lively given the excessive head. If this beer were properly carbonated, such that the head were not way too large and there was decent liveliness in the palate, it would be very good, because it certainly tastes good. Alas, it is too flawed to earn above a middling score.

Excellent beer with a fantastic aroma roasted coffee and herbs. Head dissipated quickly with a bitter flavour that is sweetened nicely. Very carbonated.
