COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled, occasional
Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2014 AROMA: rather delicate, hop-based, mainly citrus, very fresh; APPEARANCE: dark brown / black color, in intensive light - ruby, clear, with nice, pretty high beige head, beautiful lacing; TASTE: medium sweetness, medium, very elegant bitterness; PALATE: light body, rather thin texture, medium carbonation, sweet, little bitter finish, alcohol palpable only by warm in stomach; OVERALL: fantastic beer.

Good solid black IPA. Seems very well balance with plenty of coffee and light chocolate early. Hops kick in late but never even remotely gets aggressive. Nice drinking.

Pours black with brown edges with a fluffy cocoa brown head that settles to a ring and leaves some delicate spotty lace. Nose involves some dark yet not imposing roastiness, dank tropical hops, some chocolate chip cookie, floral lilac-y fragrance, some zesty spice. Pretty sweet, fairly bitter. Medium bodied, oily and slick, creamy, softer carb, with a toasty dark chocolaty drying finish. Very damn nice.

Deep dark brown to black in color, dense creamy head is light brown and bout one finger wide, stays ok and leaves quite good lacing. Aroma is strong and hoppy, pine, citrus, peppery spices, anise. Smells as if this would have a kicking palate. Palate itself is actually quite soft and round but flavor is highly bitter covering sweetness, bitterness stays long in mouth, more malty than aroma, but hops are on front here, hoppiness covers much of coffee and chocolate notes. I don’t think the balance is that good here. I usually like Brewdog’s beers but now I felt bit as if they had just decided to add more and more hops as if that would make a better and better beer. Unbalanced and bit one-sided result is not one of my favorites by this great brewery. Have to point out that my flu may have influenced here so I’ll give this a second tasting later on.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours near black with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a combination of musty dark grain and pine with a bit of roast backing. Flavor is similar with pine and dark grains backed by roast and a hint of bitterness.

Black with dark brown ale. Mild aroma of smoked ham. Smoke, smoked fish, mild malt with sweet bitter chockolate aftertaste. High in carbon.

Bottle from Rhythm and Booze, Ripon. Pour almost black with a fading tan head. Very hoppy with pine notes dominating. They pretty much over ride the malt notes with just a hint of burnt toast coming through. Very tasty still but could be better balanced.

Marstonlad (334) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAR 4, 2014
Bottle from Alko, Helsinki. A nearly black color with a medium-sized, dense white head. Aroma of strong fruitiness and grassiness, roasty notes do not appear very much. Fruitiness is fresh, even a bit tropical. Taste is rich and balanced; the smooth, medium to full bodied palate makes this delightfully drinkable. Bitterness is medium to heavy and rises towards the finish. Grass and spruce are prominent, also some lingering roasted malty notes, but on the whole, not very much. This was very rich and delicious to drink, but maybe not as varied as some black IPAs around - very hop-oriented, this one.

Bottle. Almost black, nice beige head. Great pure hoppy aroma. You canclose your eyes and be sure that you’re drinking an AIPA. Same in taste, balanced, could be more bitter. Drinkable. Compared it with my homebrewed black ale. Two great beers.
