Libertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%.

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a large light beige head, which lasts very well and leaves very good lacing. The aroma has Vienna coffee and mild dark chocolate malt, blended with grapefruit, herbal and pine needle hops. Strong citrus hops notes of grapefruit and lime up front are joined by some pine. The lime lingers into the mid-palate, where it is joined by bitter cocoa and smoother milk chocolate malt notes. Lime, lemon and a kick of pine resin hops come through in the finish. This is a very enjoyable black IPA indeed.

bottle from paradise market. had it in my fridge for ages. aroma of tropical and dark fruits, its rich. taste is tons of fruit and dark coffee chocolate. then a shock of hops. fuck i did not like it. too much for me. a balancing of extremes where neither side tempers the other. i wasnt ready for it, poured about half of it out i found it so personally unappealing

This is a bit of a surprise as I didn’t take particularly close attention to the label and wasn’t expecting the fruity vibrancy of the hoppiness in this black beer. It is a stark, jet black ale with a persistent covering of cream coloured head and good lace down the side of the glass. The American hopping comes through in the nosing to the extent that it smells similar to many New Zealand black IPA editions that are heavily influenced by the West Coast of the US. The intriguing thing about the flavour is that it has quite a soapy quality to it. Like having my mouth washed out by my mother for saying fuck out loud. My mouth was also assailed by blackberry, pastry, molasses and juniper. It was a juicy devil while it lasted. Tasty to boot.

Draft@Brewdog Leicester. Pitch black beer with a strong slightly off white head. The aroma is mildly malty and roasted, and the flavour has bitterness and good smooth roastedness. Overall a nice dark ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

My first black IPA, a very nice discovery! Dark as the night, with a small light head. Smells and tastes of malt and coffee, but the aftertaste is slightly more bitter than I would have preferred. Very nice beer overall, will have again.

Pours a deep black with moderate tan head. Aromas of grapefruit, bubble yum, and ’dank’. Flavour brings an odd fruityness that is difficult to discern. Maybe bubble yum again. Light roastiness from the dark malts. Dry on the tongue.
