#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

Bottle. Pours a reddish amber with a good, beige-colored head. Aroma is pithy, caramelly, somewhat grapefruity. Taste is pith, resinous, caramel, pine. Some grapefruit, strong, sweet caramel backed up with piney, conifer, slightly wooden hoppiness. Light grapefruit and exotic fruits, but comfortably reddish caramel dominates with the piney hops. Alcohol is completely hidden. Surprisingly light, somewhat carbonated.

330 ml bottle. #157. BB 27/05/15. From alesbymail.co.uk.
This bastard was hiding behind my advent calendar door #11. Clear red copper colour with a small foamy off-white head. Dry malt, sweet caramel, mild bitterness, banana, mild spices and some vegetable notes in the aroma. The flavour is dry malt, sweet caramel, tobacco, mild bitterness and some more maltiness. I’m not a fan of Red Ale so this ain’t easy for me. This is like Red Ale x 7.

33cl bottle from cerveteca bar in Lisbon. It pours a dark ruby colour with a thick creamy coloured head that lasts. Aroma is hops, lots of dark and dried fruits, caramel malts, citrus, orange and some lime. Taste begins with a very sweet raisin flavour, caramel malts, some toffee, and finishes with an earthy hoppy bitterness, some licorice and some citrus. It has a medium to full body, average carbonation and the presence of alcohol is well hid. A nice sweet candied beer.

330ml bottle. Clear, darkest amber colour with average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Resinous and citrusy hoppy aroma, notes of blood orange, orange, lime, cramel malty background with a toffee touch. Taste is moderately sweet malty, notes of toffee, a touch of marzipan, citrusy and herbal hoppy overtones with moderate bitterness, a touch of tobacco, some orange and orange zest; sticky palate. Round, harmonious, strong but relatively light and drinkable. Very good.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep ruby, with a smallish off-white head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Citrus oils, bitter orange, resin hops and toffee malt make up the aroma. Grapefruit, bergamot and pine hops up front give way to rich toffee malt in the mid-palate. This persists into the finish, where it is joined by more bergamot, as well as lemongrass and orange peel. An unusual beer, as should be expected from Brewdog, but a very enjoyable one.

Hoppy amber ales with a potent alcohol level have the potential to become one of my favourite beer styles, and the #Mashtag is a fine example of this species. It has a hoppy, fruity and strong aroma (although not as intense as some other BrewDog beers) of grapefruit, orange, overripe tropical fruits and caramel. The strong flavour follows the same path, with some additional pine in the back, and my taste buds say moderate sweet and heavy bitter taste. It pours a crystal clear, deep red to amber body with a light-tan head that sticks to the glass. It’s a drinkable, more-ish, crisp and refreshing beer with a smooth texture, full body and soft carbonation. Brilliant stuff, the only thing that could have brought it even higher would have been a bit more intensity in the aroma and flavour.

Beatiful read, looking great in the sun. Very little head and carbo. Aroma of american hops, bread, raisins and caramel. Taste: Very sweet, malty which drinks away nicely but is not much special. The aftertaste however is sensational. The orange peels are evident in the bitterness that really sticks for a while. Very good.
