#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

#55 BrewDog. 33 cl. bottle sampled @ Barley Legal Tasting Room. Thanks to Kraddel! Dark ruby with a tanned head. Nose is very bitter BrewDog herbal hops, bitter grainy malts & dark bread, bitter berries. Taste is berries, very bitter bread, lot of bitter peel & typical BrewDog very bitter floral hops in the finish. Nothing bad but despite all of the endless added ingredients this just tastes like yet another BrewDog beer that differs little from all of their other stuff.

33 cl bottle @ home. Batch #157, BBE 27.05.2015
Aroma is hoppy with lots of grapefruit, gooseberry bush and tropical fruits. Also some resiny malt. Flavour is sweet with fruity hops, resiny malt, some gluey tones, berries and grapefruit. Finishes with alcohol kick. Heavy and somewhat sweet. The berries and gluey tones try to ruin the show.

330ml bottle from Ales By Mail

Pours dark reddish brown with a bubbly head. Aroma of juicy ripe fruits, grass, caramel malts, toffee and berries. Taste is malty, hoppy and ripe fruits with loads of juicy berries, caramel and toffee. Finish is sweetish, warming and hoppy with loads of berries, toffee and caramel. A bit too heavy on the berry notes and slightly unbalanced.

I didn’t know what to expect from this beer by reading bottle description to be honest but I’m glad i picked it up. Purple-ish with a thin white head. So many flavours going on but very well-balanced. I cant wait for the next years #mashtag already.

330 ml bottle. Feel ruby red, thin off white head, nice lacing. Sweet malty nose, big toffee and caramel notes in the flavour, big bitter hops in the finish. Barleywine-esque

clear dark ruby with fluffy light beige head. Pithy tangerine, fruity red berries and pine on nose. Full bodied, moderate carbonation, piney, pithy bitter hops. Caramel malt, slightly astringent bark woody notes, pine, fairly high residual sugar. Decent up front but falls over a bit on finish.

330ml bottle from Bottledog. Pours super dark amber, cream head. Earthy leaves / malt aroma, some piney hop elements with grapefruit, lemon and milky citrus before a little sweet malts and concentrated orange bitterness. Strong & boozy after pouring, but mellows to a sweeter, classier lime-tinged character.

Bottle courtesy of Geraint & Helen (many thanks you two!) consumed at home Wednesday 3rd July 2014 Pours reddy brown, clear as a bell, very light slim tan head atop. Some green hops and a little toffee combine on nose. Not surprisingly the alcohol is apparent but not in a detrimental way, bittersweet, fresh and a little juicy. but with a crushingly green, fresh hoppiness stealing the show, but there is a soft maltiness and booziness also. Really nice, in fact really, really nice, Geraint was right this is very good indeed. A7 A5 T8 P4 Ov15 4.0
