#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

Bottle 330ml. @ home on the terrace.

[ As BrewDog #MashTag 2014 ].
Clear medium to dark red brown color with a large to average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, light roasted, moderate to heavy hoppy, pine, spicy hops, dark hops. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, hoppy, dark fruity hops, citrus hops, pine - wood, late some cacao - chocolate notes. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20140803]

Good strong imperial red ale. Very aromatic. aroma is like a good pale ale. Sweet and hoppy. Flavour is again sweet and hoppy. Tangerine, blood orange, and toffee. Really good balance between malt and hops. Really good beer that hides the fact it’s 9%abv very well. Highly recommend

330 ml bottle at home. Pours clear reddish amber with a bordeaux hue, quickly vanishing head, light eggshellish white. Intesne fruit hops nose, a bomb actually, tangerine, clementine oil (the moment you put your fingernails in the clementine to peel it), a bit of hops cheese, some lychee and even rosewater. Full creamy body with a nice balance between hop bitters and sweetness, some typical Brewdog smoke at the end. Taste is citrus all the way, cigar ashes of the finest Cuban cohiba :-) haha. Great IPA of the Brewdogs once again.

Fast gone off-white head over mahogany beer, not looking very carbonated. Fragrant C-hops, lunaria, nectarine, dry hopbales, straw or hay, blossoms, melon, cheese. Bitter-fruity, different kinds of citrus, laurel/bayleaf. Caramelsyrup, wafflesyrup underneath. Feels titillating, totally at odds with the looks. Medium bodied, alcohol pretty much hidden. Great one, drinks away indeed effortlessly & dangerously. I’d have imagined every kind of citrus - except probably bloodorange. But then again, I’m not surprised to be surprised. There must be a punk hidden away in me, somewhere deep.

Draught at Brewdog bar GBG. Pours clear dark brown with frothy big white head. Nose is very boozy with some slight hints of citrus fruit. Taste is starting sweet like a British barley wine with lots of caramel malts but with a very pronounced citrus tang/bite at the finishing. Interesting! Nice texture and full body. Overall a nice beer but the nose was a big downer.

Flaska 33 cl.

05-JUL-2014, bottle @home, from Utobeer, as Democratic Imperial Red Ale. Almost clear amber with low off-white head. Hoppy and malty. Caramel, orange, mineralic hops, sweet fruity malt. Quite imperial:-) Sweet and alcoholic. Nice.

Big boozy imperial red ale with a ton of blood orange & caramel. It’s wonderfully thick on the palette, & yet is incredibly moorish

Bottle at Beer Hunters, Pori. Deep clear amber color, small steady beige head. Licorice, citrus and alcohol in the nose. Medium-bodied. Salty malty flavor, caramel, bitterness, alcohol. Lingering salty bitterness. Ok.

Lively clear red beer with a thin head. Aroma is strong, orangey citrus with a hint of candy-esque sweetness. Flavour is a real blend if things. Orange, sweet malt, caramel, grapefruit and bitter hop cutting through all that for good measure. Leaves a bittersweet taste and it’s got lots of body to it as well. Would go down very nicely on a chilly night.
