#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

Clear solidly deep copper red colour with a pillowy dark white-beige head with good lacings. On the nose aromas of cara-red malt, toffee, herbs, orange, orange zest and dried lime peel develop. Softly carbonated, smooth slick texture with a full body. Fruity sweet flavours dominate offering some alcoholaromatic notes with a well pronounced toffeed hop bitterness. Harmonic beer with a lasting finish.

33cl bottle at home. Clear reddish amber brown with a small white head. Full body with moderate carbonation. Quite sweet with nice sweet tones. Pine, grapefruit, dark fruits, caramel, malts and spices. Quite a tasty and hoppy brew.

Pours deep amber, offwhite head that disappeared quickly. Very distinct aroma that reminds me a bit of "i hardcore you" nice balance of malt and hops. taste is malty, caramel and bread. There are hops as well.

Amazing how the blood orange comes through and layers on top of malty sweetness. Great west coast pine and lemon aroma. Finishes quick with a cutting dryness.

Rich raisin, prune & plum smell followed by an equally rich, full bodied taste of caramel malts with some pith bitter & sour citrus taste. An unusual, big red ale. Rated by BrewTom

0,33 l bottle from EDEKA Mohr, best before 27/5/2015. Clear, brownish red with a frothy, slowly collapsing, tan head. An absolute beauty. Lovely aroma of blood orange, toffee, lime, raisins, prunes and hints of grapefruit. Nice. Taste is a bit more dominated by caramel, raisins and prunes so that a subtle freshness of blood orange and grapefruit hides politely in the background. That perfect balance causes a high drinkability. Short, just slightly bitter finish which lets the blood orange come through a little heavier. Body is medium, mouthfeel is creamy, carbonation is almost non-existant. Overall a very good-looking, quaffable beer, lacking only a bit of hoppy bitterness in the end to round it up. Democracy works!

maekchu (2764) - Hirakata, JAPAN - JAN 25, 2015
Bottle from Sake Taniguchi (World Beer Market). Piney hop nose, with big caramel, toffee, spice, and some alcohol fumes. Reddish/brown color. Severe roast malt, caramel, herbs, chuncks of tobacco, resiny hops, and somewhat wine-like in finish. Thin-medium bosy. So tasty. Alc. is apparent in nose but hidden in flavors. Warming. LIke this one.
