#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

0,33 l bottle from EDEKA Mohr, best before 27/5/2015. Clear, brownish red with a frothy, slowly collapsing, tan head. An absolute beauty. Lovely aroma of blood orange, toffee, lime, raisins, prunes and hints of grapefruit. Nice. Taste is a bit more dominated by caramel, raisins and prunes so that a subtle freshness of blood orange and grapefruit hides politely in the background. That perfect balance causes a high drinkability. Short, just slightly bitter finish which lets the blood orange come through a little heavier. Body is medium, mouthfeel is creamy, carbonation is almost non-existant. Overall a very good-looking, quaffable beer, lacking only a bit of hoppy bitterness in the end to round it up. Democracy works!

Bottle from Sake Taniguchi (World Beer Market). Piney hop nose, with big caramel, toffee, spice, and some alcohol fumes. Reddish/brown color. Severe roast malt, caramel, herbs, chuncks of tobacco, resiny hops, and somewhat wine-like in finish. Thin-medium bosy. So tasty. Alc. is apparent in nose but hidden in flavors. Warming. LIke this one.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a pale tan head. Carbonation seems under control. First aroma is grapefruit and tart berries. Mango too. There’s a sweet aroma there too A bit like caramel malts. But More like honey in a way. Very smooth aroma. Something herbal there too. Reminiscent of lemon thyme. Taste gives a very strong impression of alcohol which is somewhat negative for the mouthfeel. Taste is full and rich. Nice molasses element to it but it’s dry and not cloying. Very nice. Bitter green herbs and grapefruit again. A waft of raisins and sultanas with a taste of grapes and plums. Very pleasing beer. Mango, molasses, honey, lemon thyme, and grapefruit. Nice

Bottle (33cl) from Vinmonopolet (Vika), Oslo. Half-inch light beige bubbly head, slowly reducing, leaving some scattered lacing. Clear, reddish amber colour. Aroma of resin, bitter orange marmalade, toffee, almonds, red berries. Semi-sweet fruity and boozy taste, with a growing, nicely paired acidity and bitterness (reminiscent of beer aged in red wine barrels). Medium/full body, soft carbonation. Dry finish.

Bottle at home. Pours a clear, deep, mahogany colour with a small, beige head. Hoppy aroma of pine, grapefruit, oak, leather, liqueur, caramel and brown sugar. A complex flavour that is quite similar to the aroma with more leather, dried fruit, cloves, oak and grassy hops. A little dry. Has a rich and silky mouth feel. A well balanced and complex ale.
