#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

reddish mahogany colour with moderate sized, long lasting, dense yellowish head, aroma of citruses (mostly grapefruit), overripe tropical fruits, some pine resin and caramel; taste of resiny and herbal hops, overripe fruits, intensive caramellic-malty sweetness and hints of citruses - excellent ale

330ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (Ł3.50):
Dark copper amber with a clear body & a 1cm beige, foamy head that fades to half that after about 5 minutes.
Hoppy with resinous pine, strong citrus & orange notes. There’s plenty bitterness with some sweetness (caramel malts mainly) & faint alcohol soon after.

Strong bitterness with pine, grapefruit & citrus taste along with some orange Sweet malts & caramel come through, some alcohol as well.
Smooth, medium body & light-medium carbonation. Some alcohol but very good balance & plenty bitterness.

This one was an excellent Brewdog beer, possibly my favourite of the 70 + beers of theirs I’ve tried. There was an excellent balance & wonderfully hoppy, bitter taste that went down a lot easier than it should have. This is definitely on of their beers that I would love to see brewed on a regular basis, or at least on a semi-regular one; I’ll have to grab another couple of bottles of the stuff before it’s gone forever.

Bottle. Dark rusty ale with a quickly thinning, though lasting, off-white head. Smells hoppy, oranges, tangerines, that brewdog sweet maltiness. Taste is surprising! Toffee, smoke, some over-ripe fruits - tangerines, oranges. Rich and sweet malts making this feel a little sticky and full. Incredibly "chewy" ale with lots of body and a drinkable, full flavour.

Bottle. Clear ruby-orange color with small unsteady head. Aroma of cranberry, grapefruit, some pepper notes. Taste is medium bitter, some earthy and citrus notes. Finish is long, with nice load of bitterness. 9% ABV can’t be detected in taste or aroma, only by thickness of body. Nice beer!
