#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

Bottle from Brewdog’s new bottle shop into tulip glass. Beautiful amber colour with medium packed lasting off white head. Zesty aroma, green apples, some mint, lychee perhaps? Wow, toffee, marmalade, sweet developing bitter back to sweet again, caramel, kind of cola and berries, grapefruit astringency. Overall, solid effort. There’s a nice orange peel aftertaste coming through....Awesome beer really, but something I probably won’t drink regularly.

Bottle courtesy of Geraint & Helen (many thanks you two!) consumed at home Wednesday 3rd July 2014 Pours reddy brown, clear as a bell, very light slim tan head atop. Some green hops and a little toffee combine on nose. Not surprisingly the alcohol is apparent but not in a detrimental way, bittersweet, fresh and a little juicy. but with a crushingly green, fresh hoppiness stealing the show, but there is a soft maltiness and booziness also. Really nice, in fact really, really nice, Geraint was right this is very good indeed. A7 A5 T8 P4 Ov15 4.0

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2014 330ml bottle, pours amber, golden brown with a small head. Aroma is packed with citrus grapefruit and mango hop, baanced over a rich caramel malty backbone. Balanced well, the abv well hidden. Good stuff
