4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 Blairgus (1029) - California, USA - JAN 27, 2012
27 jan 2012, bottle. Ruby w a pink notes. First whif had something of oak barrel in it. Ever since all I’ve gotten is sweet, meaty ale. Med/full body and a bit fizzy. Slight dry woodiness (that especially comes out in the finish), winey, wet, alcoholic raisins, fermenting bread. Nice. A little tartness in there certainly makes this unique.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Hugh (144) - Zillebeke, BELGIUM - JAN 26, 2012
Good head declining to a British type head as appropriate. Medium carbonation, amber colour. The slight aroma I took to be ’old beer’ but it isallied to the flavour, which is whisky, salty and burned malt. The palate has an alcohol burn which is the overriding sense, and a little sweetness. I do like this, but alcohol does bite the tongue.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20 ClubGonzo (1746) - Bergen, NORWAY - JAN 16, 2012
Bottle from Ølbutikken, Copenhagen. After passing on this because of luggage weight priority issues I finally managed to pick this one up, and I guess it doesn’t hurt from a couple of extra years in the cellar. :-) Pours a deep clear bronze-coppery body with a small, short-lived white head. Aroma is lovely: wood, dark fruits, red berries, whisky, deep malts, cognac and hints of molasses and tar. Taste is deep caramel malty tones with burnt sugar, whisky, wood and hints of dark fruits and peat. Extremely smooth blend, only spoiled by a vicious level of over-carbonation: a fizzy barley wine kinda misses the mark in my book. If I were to speculate (and I am, this is MY rating :-P), I’d say it feels like someone decided to force carb it after the barrel aging (which sometimes drains the beer of CO2) and then went a little trigger happy. Still a damn fine brew.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Benzai (2331) - Oirschot, NETHERLANDS - JAN 5, 2012
33cl bottle shared with Joes. Average sized off-white to beige, a little bit rough head on top of a cloudy, murky amber colored beer. Smell malts, yeast, sweetness, alcohol. Taste is quite sharp, or maybe I should say heavy. Caught me a little off-guard. Slight hint of roastyness in the aftertaste. Taste also some whisky it seems, some alcohol at least. Full body, medium carbo.

Bottle at home, out of my Maudite glass, of course. Pours hazy bronze, with a thin white head, which lasts for all of about 2 seconds, no lacing to speak of. Nose isspicy whiskey oak, sweet red fruit, prunes, figs, tobacco, and red rope licorice. NOW I remember why I generally don’t like barleywines... Flavours of Rather dense red fruit and fruitcake. Plenty of alcohol/brandy here too. Prunes, and heavy tobacco in the finish. Not really my thing.
