COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
keg and bottled, special
An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

Bottle from Heinrich3000, kwh. Tiny head, clear dark amber. Full body, bitter hops with nice sweet finish which reminds a touch to Port Wine-very fine carbonation-unbelievable 14,5%.

I had this beer a week ago and I can still remember the awesome taste, caramel, whiskey...

Nocturne (752) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - JUL 10, 2014
330ml bottle. Clear amber pour with thin ring of head. Aroma is loaded with caramel and whiskey tones. Brown sugar, raisins too. Can detect more than a hint of the DIPA that went into it. Taste is very much the same elements as the aroma, but doesn’t seem particularly complex or interesting. Sweet, warming, plus a bit of burn at times. Nice sipper but didn’t really live up to my expectations.

Bottle with thanks to BenH! Pours hazy chestnut, small off-white head dissipates to a ring that laces well. Aroma is very oaky, dark sugars, vanilla, toffee, light pine, dates. Flavor is full on sweet, medium bitter, oak, whiskey, pine, a bit of citrus. I am not getting any peaty or smoky flavors though. Full body, creamy mouthfeel. Very, very hot from the ABV. Pretty darn good, but a bit too hot.

Pours almost without a head, though a thin white head dissolves fast. Aroma is a bit spicy, but mainly sweet caramel. Tastes veeeeery, too, sweet. Raisins, vanilla, honey and whiskey. Some hops peek in the taste but not enough for a brew mixed from IPAs. Alcohol doesn’t taste through even with this abv.

Bottle from Brewdog Glasgow. Reddish-copper with almost no (white) head. In aroma, which is really intense, malt, caramel, wood, alcohol, fruits, spices and ofcourse some hops. One of the craziest aromas IMHO. Nice and smooth, but tooooo sweet.

0,33L bottle. Pours clear amber-copper with off-white head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is intense caramel, hoppy bitter, sour notes, alcohol, wood, and vanilla. Taste is very sweet, intense caramel, pine, oak, and vanilla. Finish is nice bitter with some alcohol burn. Overall: great brew.

Vaiz (3284) - Den Haag, NETHERLANDS - MAY 31, 2014
Bottle in Italy. Clear amber pour, thin off-white head. Aroma is full of whiskey, vanilla, oak, caramel, iodine, peat, sugars and quite boozy. Flavor is very sweet, spicy and very alcoholic. More bitterness comes almost minutes later and the hops end up dominating the finish. Thick body, but just not thick enough for the sweet booze bomb this is. Interesting brew, nonetheless.
