keg and bottled, special
An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

Pours clear amber low off white head Aromas of oak, vinuous alcohol, loads of caramel, cherries, red fruits Full bodied loaded with caramel malts, oaky whine notes, red fruits. Quite enjoyable. Wee bit too much alcohol in the end

Clear, deep orange, amber light ruby red in colour with a small lightly tan head. Noses of spruce, acacia/cypress, wood honey, sherry/port, earthy and leather. Chewy honey sweetness with hints of bitterness offering more complex aromas of chilli, bit of licorice, salty and rich honey molasses. Heavy slick texture furthering the complexity into resin and malt molasses. Full bodied with a scratch of bitterness. Long persisting pleasant finish.

Very caramelly aroma with some nutty elements and hints of scotch.
Clear amber almost red colour with light beige head
The taste starts pretty sweet and malty, mostly caramell. The interlude is like floral scotch, like speyside whisky. in the end the maltiness is nicely balanced out with a medium bitterness. The finish is a bit scotch and a bit alcoholic
Full body, low carbonation dry texture
Nice and very malty and affected by the whisky barrels in a good way.

Bottle, from trade with Foffern. Pours a crystal clear deep amber body with a large, long-lasting creamy off-white head. Lovely. Nose is hugely complex: whisky, smoke, bourbon, oak, vanilla, pine, spruce, herbs, dry grass, bubble gum and hints of heather honey, cognac and muscovado sugar. Taste is smooth vanilla and oak tones up front, then loads of fruity American hops, red fruits, white bubble gum, bourbon, whisky, sweet floral tones, muscovado sugar and hints of floral and herbal notes in the back. Full body, soft to medium carbonation. A really stunning piece of art, blending new and old in a very stylish and taste-saturated fashion. Props to BrewDog for still keeping their experimental skills high, despite the otherwise evident turn to mass marketing and brewing in other areas of their operation. This is absolutely gorgeous! :-)

330ml brown bottle packaged in a cardboard box. Poured into a snifter glass, appearance is clear dark ruby red with a small tan head, that reduced quickly and left no lacing. Aroma of caramel, grapes, orange peels and oak wood. Flavours of caramel, maple syrup, raisins, dried apricots, oak wood, orange peels, pine and a hint of scotch. Taste is medium heavy sweet and medium bitter. Palate is full bodied, syrup like thick sticky texture and soft carbonation. A decent beer overall, but I think the citrusy/piney hops clash with the heavy sweetness and other flavours in the beer. This beer would have been excellent less hopped, with more maltiness and scotch like character.

Bottle, shared at Øltorget Mathallen november 9th 2013. Dark brown body, small beige head. Aroma of vanilla, caramel malt, wood. Taste is lively, complex blend of fruit, berries, sherry, vanilla. Very enjoyable and quite easy drinking for a 14,5%, I’d have guessed about 8-9%. At the end the fruits are more present, with raisins and a sweet oaky palate, lasting bitterness with mango and orange. A very nice experience.
