COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
keg and bottled, special
An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

Pours ruby red/brown clear with one finger white head. Nose is dark fruits, toffee and scotch. Taste is more on the fruity and hoppy side, yet very sweet and lots of caramel notes. Some warming alcohol as well. Full body, low carbonation. Excellent brew, but more of a barley wine than an IPA.

Bottle at home, from BD Online, 16/10/14. Amber with reddish hues topped with a decent beige covering. Nose is candied frut peel, sweet notes, touch of booze, bitter tropical bastards, light smoke, toffee. Taste comprises sweet tingles, rich caramel, candied fruit peel, booze tunes, light spice, toffee fudge, figs, dates. Full bodied, fine carbonation, warming alcohol in the close. Decent offering, boozey do but drinks a good chunk below the ABV!

Aroma and flavour is caramel, vanilla, oak, dark fruits, yeast, and a hint of something vinous/boozy – with a bitter, alcoholic finish.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep copper ruby, with a small off-white head, which lasts fairly well and leaves decent lacing. Bergamot and resin hops, raisins, sherry and a touch of Scotch make for a highly appealing aroma. Strong bergamot, floral and resin hops up front give way to honey, raisins and muscat in the mid-palate. Hints of prune lead into a warming Scotch finish. This is the best beer I have had for some time, and really reminds me why I like BrewDog so much. Only they could come up with this lunatic 14.5% blend of IPAs, and somehow have it work so well.

Interesting: the complicated label doesn’t seem to carry any information about the beer, not even the name; everything is only on the box.
It pours a bright amber color with compact head, although the head is short lived. The aroma is deep and pleasing, very malty, like a good Barley Wine, sweet, hoppy, with hits of vanilla and oak. Full bodied; the flavor is very malty, again like a good Barley Wine, sweet with no excess of roasted malt character, some toffee instead; bold bitterness, but well balanced in this strong malty beer, with a mix of soft hop resins and hop fruits; the vanilla/oak in the final is a cherry on top.
I get the same feeling as the first time I had Dogfish Head Immort Ale and similar beers: powerful and candy-sweet, my kind of sipper.

Bottle (33cl). Half-inch off-white head, reduces quite quickly to a thin film with a small amount of lacing. Gorgeous copper/amber colour, clear. Rich, intense, sweet and complex aroma of concentrated fruit, aged sweet sherry, caramel, tobacco, almonds, herbs, hint of mint/menthol. Full body, soft carbonation. Very sweet taste with some alcohol burn, but taste is pleasantly (dangerously) non-alcoholic. A mild acidity and bitterness gives a good overall balance.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with an airy mocha head. Aroma is wooden barrels, dark fruits, tobacco and malty grain, as well as some sweet hoppiness. Full creamy body with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet and malty with cocoa, tobacco, wooden barrels, kandi and dark fruits, with a fruity and sweet slightly hoppy finish. Solid brew.
