COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
keg and bottled, special
An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

2014-07-23. Crisp dark amber body with a small frothy beige head. 3+ Aroma is sweet, light tea like accents, muted fruit notes. Flavour is quite sweet, sugary and sort of fruity throughout, lightly bitter and alcoholic in the finish, lingering sweet sugary malt in the aftertaste. Pleasant, the alcohol is surprisingly restrained considering. Dangerously drinkable. Smooth average plus bodied palate, low to no carbonation. 3+ Pretty nice but I don’t love it. Bottle from either BrewDog or Valhalla’s Goat, Glasgow. I forget which.

Clear brown color, small teal head. Malty, sweet, alcohol, raisin scent. Sweet, alcohol, raisin taste. Warming alcohol. Perfume aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness.

Thanks to jercraigs and Mabel for this one. Amber-brown pour. The nose is lovely. Pine and a bit of sweet brown sugar along with a touch of fruit. Rich and hoppy with a nice softly resiny character. Date and plum along with the hoppiness. Pretty lovely brew really. It’s got a nice bit of malt character.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2014 Re-rate 31/01/2014. Lot more complexity starting to come out, including the barrel and some Belgian yeast notes. Getting better... 330ml bottle from Appellation Wines - cheers Ash! For all the blurb, we’re in pretty standard US-barley wine or Double IPA territory here. Fresh citrus hop aromas disguise any other subtleties that might be there from the Tripel end of the mix, or even from the barrel aging. I’m not finding it as sweet as some of the other reviewers, and think it’s quite well-balanced, if not ’all that’. Got a few stashed away, so might re-rate if it improves with age.

33 cl bottle.
Pours clear dark mahogany color with a small head. Aroma has lots of sweet ripe fruits and caramel, some malts, toffee and sugary notes also, alcohol comes through as well. Flavor is also extremely sweet with caramel and ripe fruits, some sugar, malts, nutty notes and faint wood. Sticky sweet palate, lingering caramel finish. Way too sweet, but manages to keep the alcohol at bay on some level.

[6556-20140723] Bottle. Mild fruity grains aroma. Clear, amber brown body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Super sweet toasted toffee flavour has a long-lasting sweet tea aftertaste. Medium body is surprisingly boozy, wait, what? It’s 14.5%?? Tasty, nice toffee notes but quite boozy. (7/4/8/3/15) 3.7

33 cl bottle @ William K Kurvi.
Aroma has alcohol, lots of raisins, some glue and sweet, heavy malt typical to American strong ales. Flavour has alcohol, woody notes, fruity and heavy malt, some caramel and toffee. Boozy but warming. Tastes like a typical American strong ale, the scotch is well hidden.

Bottle from Voldby, shared with Niller - dark amber pour with a lazing off-white head. Aroma and taste is big heavy sweet malty, with caramel, toffee, dark dried fruits, some moderate spice throughout. Quite a bad boy this, and really enjoyed it.

330 ml bottle.
Pours an amber colour with a slightly off-white head. Aroma of heavy sweet English toffee, raisins, wood, weak vanilla notes and whisky. Rich flavour of heavy sweet maltiness, wood, vanilla, grassy bitterness, orange juice, spruce, burnt sugar and some herbal notes. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Alcohol comes through too much. For those with a sweet tooth.

Bottle from Bottle park, Bratislava. Dark amber color with minimal white head. Aroma of whiskey, malt, fruits, caramel. Very sweet taste with caramel, malt, dried fruits, candied orange zest, vanilla, oak, alcohol - whiskey. Full bodied beer. Sweet strong alcoholic finish. Very tasty sipper, I liked it a lot. Perfect birthday drink.
