COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
keg and bottled, special
An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

Pours a clear amber with a small off-white head. Smells of almond. Very sweet with loads of caramel and toffee. Some cask wood. Full bodied. Soft carbonation. Dry finish.

33cl bottle, shared @Kaisla 30.11.2013. Poured mahogany, clear, no head. Strong dark fruity aroma with toffee, wood, sweetness and alcohol. Flavor has raisins, toffee, hops, wood, mild smokey notes. Full bodied, oily and sticky. Long warming sweet toffee finish. Complex and heavy stuff. Could well try this again.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2014 Bottle from BrewDog Shoreditch. Pours deep amber with a small, sticky beige head. Nose is quite sweet and boozy with heavy caramlised raisin, fig, date - bucket loads of dried fruits and burnt undertones. A fairly sweet beer but damn smooth for the ABV. Creamy stufff. Creme caramel, nutty underneath, oaky vanilla, coffee, stewed fruits. There is heat but it’s the type of heat that I like and I think it works well. Good stuff

Bottle with thanks to BenH! Pours hazy chestnut, small off-white head dissipates to a ring that laces well. Aroma is very oaky, dark sugars, vanilla, toffee, light pine, dates. Flavor is full on sweet, medium bitter, oak, whiskey, pine, a bit of citrus. I am not getting any peaty or smoky flavors though. Full body, creamy mouthfeel. Very, very hot from the ABV. Pretty darn good, but a bit too hot.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2014 Re-rate 31/01/2014. Lot more complexity starting to come out, including the barrel and some Belgian yeast notes. Getting better... 330ml bottle from Appellation Wines - cheers Ash! For all the blurb, we’re in pretty standard US-barley wine or Double IPA territory here. Fresh citrus hop aromas disguise any other subtleties that might be there from the Tripel end of the mix, or even from the barrel aging. I’m not finding it as sweet as some of the other reviewers, and think it’s quite well-balanced, if not ’all that’. Got a few stashed away, so might re-rate if it improves with age.

Dark hazy chestnut with beige head collapsing to a lacing. Rich toffee and resinous pine nose. Full bodied, smooth, light carbonation. Vanilla oaky butterscotch sweetness tempered by rich resinous hops and red berries. Quite sweet with a touch of woody astringency. A dessert sipper and not much needed.

Bottled. pours clear, eep golden with a small off-white head. Aroma of toasted caramel wood and spicy notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry, bitter and with alcohol. Medium to full bodied, oily texture and soft carb. An excellent Strong Ale.

Another old rating I’ve just found. 33cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - dark amber so the oaking presumably has darkened it a little. Not much head. Nose - pine and citrus probably oranges. Not a huge amount of evidence of Belgian yeast in there. Not sure what I was expecting. Taste - mire of the same. I expected some sweeter notes. Palate - medium to full bodied with a tangy texture and a fairly balanced finish. Overall - interesting though perhaps a few months will help it to knit together better.

Bottle. Looks very nice, glowing amber with off white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, dried fruit and resin. Taste of sherry fruits, raisin, resinous hops. No alcohol flavour but some burn in the chest. Very sweet and drinks like a sherry. Nice, I like this
