keg and bottled, special
An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

OH MY GOD! This is a GREAT beer! It has a supurb mouthfeel, a thickness to it, that makes you feel its really dark, and a hop menu that is to die for! This may be the finest beer that BrewDog have EVER made. As a blend of Scotch whisky aged Belgain quad and a Scotch whisky aged Imperial IPA... this is OUTRAGOUS! I love dark beers, but OH MY GOD! This beer is INSANE!

33cl. Bottle. Pours amber red brown almost syrupy like, with a small white head. The head disappears quickly leaving a thin layer of bubbles. Aroma when opening the bottle and pouring the whisky and alcohol are the first things that hit the nose. Also fruit, cherry, grape, apricot, berries, raisins, vanilla, caramel, toffee en bit earthy wood. So much is going on. Taste starts with a smooth caramel, vanilla sweetness followed by the fruits. A tinteling lovely bitter at the end with a warming feel of alcohol. All of the elements in the aroma come back in the taste. Mouth-feel on this one is excellent! thick silky with a tiny sparkle on the tongue. Amazing beer, a complex nose and everything coming back in the taste. The mouth-feel is awesome.

Appearance: Clear amber/copper with cm thick ivory head which quickly disappeared. Aroma: Toffee, syrup, woody, vanilla, vinous/spiritous, liquorice, orange peel, peat and musky. Taste: Medium/high sweetness, low/medium bitterness and low sourness. Palate: Thick grainy texture, heavy body, low carbonation, lingering sweet, astringent syrup, slightly spicy finish with a kick of alcohol warmth. Comments: Lovely, if it wasn’t the afternoon it would be the perfect night cap! So much going on in the taste and aroma, one minute its a triple, then its a strong IPA and then an aged beer.

Bottle. A cherry wood beer with NO head at all - even with a good shake, it can only muster up a tan fuzz and then fades away to nothing. The nose is powerful - there’s cherry liqueur, reminding me of Christmas, then a waft of woodiness, some banana confection and icing sugar, vanilla, whisky... there’s more here, but I can’t sit around sniffing it all day. BAM! The taste hits right away, but I need to sup it down so I can’t even taste the first mouthful. All I’m left with is a warmth and heat and a sweet whisky taste in my mouth. There’s more cherry in there too. Second mouthful is a bit more rewarding, pulling out smokey wood, licorice, raisins, there’s stacks of whisky notes in here and it forces you to sip sip sip. I can’t really find the hoppiness, but I can find the belgian twist in here, there’s a malty sweetness throughout this. A saltiness. A sourness at times. After letting it sit on the palate for a while, more flavours come out - more fruits of the forest, more grasses, more grains... do I agree that this is "fucking complex". Yes, I wouldn’t sit and drink bottle after bottle, but as a wee treat, this is quite special.

Bottle from Mane Liquor Treasure Trove of Phallic Artifacts. Pours golden brown with no head and heavy khaki lacing. Big aroma of caramel, maple syrup, brown sugar and cherries. Lots of dark malts and oaky vanilla. Flavours are immaculate - lots of maple syrup, brown sugar, cherries, raisins, coconut. Great chewy mouthfeel. The beer is sweet but well balanced. Almost like a mix of a barleywine, strong ale and a scotch ale.

Bottle, from trade with Foffern. Pours a crystal clear deep amber body with a large, long-lasting creamy off-white head. Lovely. Nose is hugely complex: whisky, smoke, bourbon, oak, vanilla, pine, spruce, herbs, dry grass, bubble gum and hints of heather honey, cognac and muscovado sugar. Taste is smooth vanilla and oak tones up front, then loads of fruity American hops, red fruits, white bubble gum, bourbon, whisky, sweet floral tones, muscovado sugar and hints of floral and herbal notes in the back. Full body, soft to medium carbonation. A really stunning piece of art, blending new and old in a very stylish and taste-saturated fashion. Props to BrewDog for still keeping their experimental skills high, despite the otherwise evident turn to mass marketing and brewing in other areas of their operation. This is absolutely gorgeous! :-)
