And this time it is all about the beer, and the beer is awesome! Gone are the 200+ IBUs which brought grown men to tears! Our new Nanny State is 0.5% ABV and focuses on being a great drink as opposed to a great publicity ploy. This beer is now focussed on getting all that is good about BrewDog into a practically alcohol free format. It is a West Coast inspired pale ale with a difference!

The beer has 45 IBUS and is brewed with centennial, amarillo, columbus, cascade and simcoe and intensively dry-hopped with centennial and amarillo. The backbone is provided by 8 different types of speciality malts with only 87 kilos of malt used in a 20HL batch (our Punk IPA uses 450 kilos in 20HL).

Clear tan color. Fruity, tropical hop aroma, hint of caramel. Not much else. Tastes like a hop spritzer. No sweetness at all, very bitter, but surprisingly flavorful for a n/a beer. For when you want some hoppy goodness without the booze. Not bad.

33 cl bottle. Clear golden red-brown, white foamy head, low carbonation. Aroma is hoppy, as expected. Mouthfeel is watery with a dry finish, well carbonated and bitter. Taste is pleasantly filled with hops and some specialty grain flavours. This is the best Low Alcohol beverage I’ve tasted so far. Great for the hop heads among us, in situations where we can’t drink the real McCoy.

Pourquoi pas. Nez entre litchi, agrumes. Du houblon. très aqueuse. Légèrement malté. Finale très chlorophyllienne, un peu dérangeant.

Riecht wahnsinnig abgefahren.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2016 After that infamous battle about making the strongest beer in the world, our friends of BrewDog apparently took it the other way and produced this hypo-alcoholic ISA. Pours a weird brownish, mahogany-hued copper colour, clear with no visible sparkling at all, under a thick, moussy, off-white, dense but slowly breaking head. Aroma of juniper berries, spruce shoots, dried grapefruit peel, some dried tomato, roasted peanuts, rainwater, caramel, raw spinach, dried mediterranean herbs. Clean, fairly neutral onset, dominated by some kind of basic sourishness with way too low - if any at all - sweet fruitiness for balance, soft carbo, thin and watery mouthfeel as can be expected from a beer of this ABV, nutty and toasted malts but in a watery environment, dryish finish with some retronasal dried grapefruit peel tendencies as well as a weak, watered-down peppery hops hint. Obviously a beer of this ’weakness’ will never produce a malt body thick and solid enough to counter for this amount of hops: this is an understatement of a session IPA, rich enough in terms of aroma alone, but somehow the complete lack of (malty) body makes this taste like (lightly) sparkling water hopped with some overly fragrant American piney hop variety. The hops dominate against almost nothing - needless to say, this ’table beer’ is completely out of balance. My guess is that this would have been a lot better if the hop dosis would have been toned down a bit - agreed it would have been a lot more boring, but at least I would not have been left with the feeling I just drank heavily ’American’ hopped water... Good for the tick but this irritates me probably more than anything else I ever had from this hyped brewery - move on to the next.

Bottled from local grocery store. Copper colored, dying head. Beautiful hoppy nose, flowery. Very watery flavor, hardly any hops there, extremely thin mouthfeel. Great smell, but apart from that pretty awful.

Bottle from Tesco, Skipton. Copper coloured with an amber glow. It has a wonderful hoppy tropical fruit nose, but the lack of alcohol is more than evident in its weak taste. There are a few hops here though.

33c bottle. Dark amber pour with an almost non-existent tan head. Smells of pine and citrus hops. The taste is very bitter, with notes of grapefruit, orange zest and pine resin and no kind of malty sweetness whatsoever. A very harsh bitter aftertaste, but even so, the best non-alcoholic beer I have tasted, to date.

12oz bottle from Tesco. Pours light golden brown with a light beige head. Aroma is citrus hop, mostly grapefruit. Taste is watery with a touch of biscuit and grapefruit hop bitterness. It’s not amazing, but really remarkable for 0.5%. Would drink again. So chuggable!
