4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
#750 rating: 33 cl. bottle @ home – split by 3 with me taking +/- 20 cl. – purchased at Hopduvel – it comes in a cardboard box which I suppose is meant to justify the price, kind of cheep looking & graced by the usual Brewdog marketing text, not sure whether it is working, kind of doubted about this one but the actual bottle looks lovely, great design – pours pitch, pitch black with virtually no head – smell is very, very sweet, lots of molasses, toffee, liquorish, heavy malt and a lovely touch of soy sauce – taste is heavily sweet, molasses, lots of caramel, thick dark fruits, thick maple syrup, lots of liquorish, hint of autumn leaves, some oak, thick malts (touch roast but it is buried underneath the sweetness), touch dark chocolate, alcohol is almost entirely masked by the sweetness, only a slight nice warming ouch at the end – body is thick, creamy & molasses heavy, low carbonation – beyond the marketing, beyond the faux-hype this is incredible, much better than Black & significantly better than both versions of Tokyo* that I have had, maybe it is the horizon that makes this amazing

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Shared bottle @ Cardinal. Black as black can be, packed with aromas. I really can’t describe this beer as my mouth got violated by all the flavors who wanted to join the game. The alcohol is well masked by all the flavors! It’s a really special ale which should only be experienced by all beer-geeks. A truly great collab. brew!

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20
From a 330ml bottle on 9/2/2012 (batch 057, best before 20/07/21). Pours very close to black with absolutely no head. The aroma includes prunes, dates, raisins, dark chocolate, honey, sweet and sour bread, soy sauce and spice. The flavour is an explosion of sweet goodness - oodles of dark and milk chocolate, caramel fudge, dark fruit, brown sugar, honey and licorice. This is countered by a substantial hoppy roasty bitterness. The texture is syrupy, but its dangerously quaffable for 17.2%. I’ve not had a Dark Horizon, but this one definitely tops the Tokyo* and Black imo. I paid almost $45 bucks for this bad boy, making it the most expensive beer I’ve had to date, but it was worth it. An astoundingly good dessert beer.

A fascinating beer, but needs to be sipped. It taste a bit too sweet, sticky and thick.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle in a thin cardboard box, batch #057, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 17.2%. Pitch black colour, low brown head. Strong and complex aroma of tar, sea water, iodine, old rope, heavily roasted malts, coffee, salty liquorice, dark chocolate, smoke and ashes. Extremely rich mouthfeel. The flavour is very sweet with loads of malt sugar, dark syrup and molasses, coffee, liquorice and chocolate, hints of smoke. No doubt a fair amount of hops here too, but they nearly drown in all the sweetness. A beer to be cellared for many more years, I assume.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, bought @ ølbutikken, cph.
Pours utterly deep black with a small, creamy, beige film head. Aroma is sweet, lots of dark chocolate, madeira, plums, vinious, light roasted, some soy sauce. A soft nutty and milky note. Low carbonation, fat and oily mouthfeel. Light dryness. Flavour is sweet at first, chocolate milk, nuts, soft roasted. Some fruity notes and quite vinious. Fairly dry, malty finish. Okay balanced.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Brewdog online shop. Black colour, thin tan head. Lovely nose of roasted malts, coffee and dark fruits. Flavour of roasted malts, sweet almost sickly liquorice, sour fruits, milk chocolate. A bit messy and way too sweet to my liking. Needs time to age.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a deep viscous black colour with a faint dark brown head. Sweet roasted malts and molasses in the aroma together with some notes of black berries, coffee and booze, great nose. Warm alcohol feel on the taste but not overwhealming. Hints of raisins, vanilla and figs. Heavy sweetness overall on the flavour and very complex. Full body, oily feel, flat carbonation and a long sweet liquor like finish. A very complex beer. Well done, but I don’t think that reflects the best of each brewery. But is definitely a must try!

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Small to medium dark brown-beige head over pitch black beer. Nutty, alcohol, sweet roaste, faintly meaty, fusel-y nose. Sweet-bitter, quite roasted and again meaty. Alcohol in force retronasal and @ swallowing. Touch of saltiness, gravy-fried vegetables. Main flavours long-lasting, slowly fading. After some time, impression of charcoaled shrimps. Very well-bodied, fiery MF, slick to outright viscous. Impressive. As expected.
