Gently crated by hand in Scotland, this Old World Stout perfectly recreates the imperial beers of years gone by; brewed to the traditional percentage of alc. 9.5% by vol. To avoid freezing during its journey across the Baltic Sea to snowy Moscow.
All full bodied taste, this opulent whirl of hops and malt even rivals the most colourful of imperial faberge eggs.
Originally created to celebrate the Russian royal family, this beer is a fitting tribute with which to toast your own empire.- See more at: http://www.brewdog.com/product/old-world-russian-imperial-stout#sthash.sIclAyxe.dpuf

The other Old World beer from BrewDog, celebrating the history of Russian imperial stout, as is elaborately depicted on the fascinating label. Tasted along with the IPA in this ’series’ and generously shared by Stefan. Medium sized, dense, creamy, lovely brownish beige head on top of an ink black beer only revealing itself to be a very dark chestnut brown in the last drops but still less ’black’ than the more extreme examples of this style. Complex, dense aroma of bitter chocolate, mocha ice cream, bayleaf, hazelnuts, vanilla, toasted bread, whisky, coffee with cinnamon, some black olive. Dense, well-retained candied sweetness, dried banana and soft sweetish nuttiness, plums and raisins, deep sourish accent for balance, soft carbo; thick, fat, oily mouthfeel, opulent and profound caramelly, nutty and eventually deep black chocolate bitter maltiness with a subtle coffee roasted bitterness increasing a bit in the end, where it teams up with soft spicy yeastiness (bayleaf, vague cloves), lingering creamy candy sweetness, spicy hop bitterness and warming, whisky-like alcohol which nevertheless remains gentle and restrained. BrewDog, among many others in both North America and western Europe nowadays, is famous for its extreme interpretations of the style, in flavour, alcohol and sometimes added ingredients; most of these are absolutely epic, but in this one they succesfully restrained themselves to aim at balance and historical authenticity. Indeed, imperial stouts in the ’old days’ were less strong and less intense than they often are nowadays; this one is actually closer to the original English classics Courage Russian Imperial Stout or Samuel Adams Imperial Stout. A true and respectful ode to the roots of the style indeed and a must try for everyone interested in this style. International allure, if you ask me, not for extremities, but for perfect balance and technical accomplishment.

Bottle 75cl, thanks to Stephan! Very simply as it should be in appearance: inkblack, with a small tanned head. Beautiful aroma of vanilla, roasted malts, mocca, coffee, liquorice, bread, dough, bayleaf and hops. Taste is of sweet roasted malts, coffe, chocolate, fruity notes, nuts, it has a cirtric edge to it, lovely soft hops. A nice oily aftertaste of liquorice, vanilla, with a slightly peppery, msilt edge. This is one very well balanced RIS, makes you wish there’d be more ’old style’ brews like this beauty! Absolute old fashioned good beer! ( as it should be..)

Bottle. Pours pitch black with beige head. Aroma of toasted and roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, raisins. In taste sweet, coffee and chocolate flavours. Full bodied, quite bitter, softly carbonatef. In overall very nice but to the best lacks some more depth in taste.

Small brown head. Opaque black body. Raisiny perfumy roasty aroma with cocolatey spice and smoke notes. Sweetish perfumy roasty cardamom taste with chocolate and soy sauce notes. Full-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel leaves some heat. Dryish roasty chocolate and perfume aftertaste with spicy cardamom notes. Nice, drinkable, different, and full of flavour. (0.3l draft at Beer Palace, Oslo.)
