4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 Beershine (4715) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - AUG 20, 2008
At Vero. Darker than the Macallan. Also a more honeyed nose. Scotchy and meaty. Velvet mouthfeel is impossibly smooth. Excellent texture. Complex, lingering slight char in the finish. Peat, smoke, wood mingle and party together. Super brew.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 juiceisloose (1048) - Windermere, Florida, USA - AUG 19, 2008
Courtesy growler. Pours a dark mahogany brown with a small tan head that recedes quickly. The aroma is of dark roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, and hints of peat from the barrel. The aroma is pretty subtle nd the subtle flavors confirm this. The chocolate, roasted malts, and some vanilla are up front and smooth with the slight smoky scotch in the background. Medium bodied mouthfeel and very smooth and easy to drink. This one is pretty toned down from the others as there isn’t much heat from the scotch. Still the flavors blend well and is enjoyable to drink.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 argo0 (9224) - Washington DC, USA - AUG 18, 2008
(33cl bottle, sampled side-by-side with Islay 009, Speyside 010, and Macallan 011) Small beige head that mostly diminishes atop clear red-black body, no lacing. Aroma is medium sweet, Scotch, some chocolate, milder aroma than the other three. Taste is medium sweet, bittersweet chocolate, some Scotch, roast. Medium body, low carbonation.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 wilkie (1209) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - AUG 18, 2008
11.2oz bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! Done with comparison to three other Paradox Impys. Pours black, ruby edges, tan head. Faint alcohol in aroma, with chocolate. Flavor is chocolate at very end. More chocolate as it warms.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Oakes (10184) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - AUG 18, 2008
Slightly lighter brown than the Macallan. Clear. The nose is woody, earthy, slightly mushroomy with a little bit of alcohol and chocolate. Rounded, soft palate is sticky, chewy, rummy. The toffee and dark chocolate is fun, with some pepper and alcohol finish.
4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 bhensonb (7579) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 17, 2008
Bottle from PC Market of Choice, Eugene, OR. Near opaque brown black color with dark garnet hilites. The head is itty tan bubbles. Aromas of scotch whiskey and dark toasted malt. Medium body with very slight carbonation. Flavor is oak, burnt toast, cola, and more. Finish is slightly sweet, balanced by burnt malt bitter. Incredibly smooth, so drinkable. O- M- G-- it’s g---. Seems to get drier with repetition.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - AUG 14, 2008
Pours a semi-transparent dark mahogany with a thin, wispy light tan head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel with some smoky peat, roasty malt and dark chocolate. Body starts fairly full and dark caramely sweet with good complex dark chocolate and coffee notes. Finishes slightly drier with mild Scotch character. Pretty subdued compared to the other Paradox beers.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Angeloregon (2054) - Portland, Oregon, USA - AUG 14, 2008
Bottle from John’s in Portland--Poured a deep deep brown body (opaque) with little head. Nose of bold whiskey notes with other sharp complexities. A little one dimensional for the style. Perhaps needed to age longer. Some vanilla and chocolate hints, but a little hot and trying too hard.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 kmweaver (3046) - Santa Rosa, California, USA - AUG 13, 2008
11.2oz bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! We did a side-by-side of four of these (Islay 009, Speyside 010, Macallan 011, Glen Grant 003), and they looked nearly identical: dark, murky brown color; thin, light-tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Lots of dried dark fruits, nougat, and caramel in the aroma; pretty similar to the Speyside 010, with additional toasty vanilla; very chocolatey, showing the beer beneath. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lots of chewy, toasty vanilla and dried dark fruits (dates, raisins); very toasty and lots of vanilla coming through from the barrel; nicely toasty and viscous, with a soft barrel presence. Tasty stuff. Lengthy finish: toasty malts, caramel, and chocolate; nicely dry.

Bottles courtesy of growler and darkguardian. Pours dark brown/black with minimal head. Aromas of burnt malt, smoke and scotch. Similar flavors with some vanilla, chocolate and peat. More mellow flavors than the Macallum. Full body with minimal carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel.
