Powertrip (63), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jul 5, 2008 Lot’s of nose here. Coffee, vanilla, oak, malt, honey and a touch of smoke. Appearence is stout-dark dominant, with a ring of whisky on the lip! The aging really did suck something out of the grain casks. Flavour misses the mark. I have tried pale beers that work much better with oak and whisky, but the force of a good stout is an overload. There is just too much going on here and all of it fails to work with each other. The stout comes on strong at first with deep chocolate riches, but then battles with a clash of grain mid-palate. Then the old oak tries to get in on the action but is pushed to the back. No teamwork here unfortunately, save for a pleasing whisky linger in the throat.
hopdog (4525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 16, 2008 11.2oz bottle. Batch 007 BB 3/12/08. Poured a dark brown color with red edges and an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of oak, wood, vanilla, light whiskey, and some earthiness. Tastes of wood, vanilla, whiskey, light peat, caramel, and some dark fruits. plovmand (454), Helsinge, Denmark Aug 7, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown almost black colour with a medium beige head. I sense vanilla and oak besides from the expected roasted malt, chocolate and liqorice. Some port in nose as well. Flavour is dakr roasty malts and the sweetness from a whisky cask. Very long roasty finish of vanilla and oak. Very interesting brew. Mitch_Wayne (77), Kokkola, Finland Aug 6, 2008 Smooth beer with vanilla and whisky flavors finishing to a nice oaky dry roasted finnish. Admirably balanced near perfect marriage of beer and whiskey, the aroma promises a lot and the taste manages to top it. I love this stuff. douglas88 (708), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jul 31, 2008 Updated: Aug 4, 2008A big thanks to Andrew for sending this beer a few months ago from Scotland. Pours a clear black with a tiny head. The aroma is rich oak and whisky notes, some vanilla too. The taste is very smooth; very noticeable cask aging, a nice sweet whisky flavor, some vanilla and light coffee, a small peat aspect too. Very nice, understated and refined. larsniclas (2794), Gothenburg, Sweden Jul 27, 2008 Bottled.
Black with a medium, off-white head.
Burnt and slightly metallic aroma with some macerel.
Wood, oak, licorice, coffee and chocolate in the flavour.
