4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours dark as a night without stars out in the mountains and away from the city, though there is upon closer examination a ruby, brownish tint at the edge. What little head there is diminishes quickly but persists at the rim. Nose is vanilla, a bit of honey, some caramel pudding, and perhaps a whiff of cinnamon spice -- alcohol surprisingly, and happily, subdued in the smell. Substantial palate though it doesn’t feel heavy. Really complex in the mouth: long, long taste that moves from dried fruit (apricots, raisins, some prunes) to the said vanilla and touch of spice to coffee and then a mouthful of unadulterated bourbon bliss. Finish is long with a slight burn at the back, when the end finally comes (as it sadly must). A brew to savor patiently and slowly, slightly chilled in the tropics though as the label advises at room temperature in more temperate climes. Another impressive performance from Brewdog in their Paradox series.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours an onyx black body with a small light beige head. Aroma is strong bourbon tones, with cocoa, peanuts, wood, alcohol, mild soy sauce and almonds. Also, there is chocolate, coffee, licorice and dark malts floating around - all in all, the wall of fragrances is almost overwhelming but highly pleasant, almost sensual. Taste follows up with loads of chocolate, bourbon alcohol tones, licorice, dry wooden notes, burnt sugar, coffee, dark malts and hints of cocoa, caramel and peanuts. Full body, soft to medium carbonation. A bit harsh on the whiskey-alcoholic side, but otherwise a classic feast for the senses in the way only bourbon BA imperial stouts can do. Very nice.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JUL 19, 2014 Pitch black colour (>80 EBC) with some lovely dark ruby red relfexions. Shows a a creamy dark toast coloured fine head lasting for long. On the nose the first aromas of roasted vanilla coffee malt with an ethanolic touch develop. Then dried dark fruit like dates and sunburnt wood and toffee aromas develop. With a faintly soft fizz the beer opens a delicate slick somewhat velvety mouthfeel which clearly develops spicy and treacle flavours. Full bodied with sweet wooden vanilla and dried dark fruit notes envelopped by the noticeable spicyness. Yet all is well balanced. The finish offers light burnt toffee notes on top of it and lasts for a good while demanding another wee sip! And when you think the finish fades away it just holds on with a spicy dryness.
