1 tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA May 15, 2008 12oz bottle. Let me preface this by saying that I am a HUGE Ardbeg (and south shore Islay distilleries in general) fan. So my review might be skewed a bit toward the positive.
Hugely peaty and smoky aroma with essences of wet wood and dark chocolate in the background. Earthy, mossy, dusty with a touch of alcohol as well. Hefty barrel presence on the nose for sure. Pours a dark, thick brown with a thin film of khaki subsiding on top. Loads of smoke and peat on the tongue with a slight musty wood component. The Ardbeg presence is absolutely massive and honestly covers up just about any trace of imperial stout. I like it, though. Leaning toward full bodied. Creamy and delicate carbonation. <p/>
If you like Ardbeg, by all means seek this one out, but if not, stay far, far away. Odeed (1666), Bakersfield, California, USA May 5, 2008 this one was a bit better than the 8,but it still had that funky ass cardboard/glue taste. pantani (1895), Salinas, California, USA May 5, 2008 Black with a thin white head. Aroma is chocolate, moss, cardboard, tobacco. taste is tobacco, chocolate, cardboard, and smoke. IrishBoy (2686), Bakersfield, California, USA May 5, 2008 330ml bottle from fiver29; Nose of chocolate and smoke; not too much better than the Batch 008. black wit a small off-white head; jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA May 4, 2008 12oz bottle@Vero Beach Throwdown-pours no head and black color. Aroma is smoke/peat, oak/wood. Taste is very smoke/peat, oak/wood. Sipping. Occasional. Thanks hopscotch for sharing. ratman197 (3141), Arvada, Colorado, USA May 1, 2008 Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown nearly black with a lasting tan head. Aromas of smoke, peat, iodine, charcoal, roasted malt and light hints of chocolate and vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of smoke, peat, iodine, wet charcoal, roasted malt, bitter chocolate and a hint of vanilla with a smooth lingering smokey finish. This beer is definitly a sipper, not bad but would have been better with less time in the barrel. The flavor of the beer is overpowered by the scotch flavors. pilsnerrogge (1770), Finspång, Sweden May 1, 2008 Bottle Colour is black with a sinking head. Aroma is tar, iodine, smoke and ash; smells a lot like a good islay whisky. Flavour is more tar, firewood, coal and maybe some notes of coffee. Yet it’s quite smooth and quaffable. Long after taste. The guys at Innis & Gunn could learn a thing or two from the BrewDog guys I think.
