Commercial Description:
Bottle; Special.
NOTE: Marked batch 009 on the bottle label. Matured in an Ardbeg cask although this is not detailed on the label.
This Imperial Stout has been matured in specially selected Islay Malt Whisky casks.
This aging process infuses into the beer all the threatening smoke, the encapsulating peat, the Atlantic essence and raw power of Scotland's most distinctive Whiskies.

Thanks Radek for this one. The whiskey aroma is huge for the first few minutes and then eases off. The rest of it was liquid smoke, which reminded me much of Calume Grand Chef, still with distinct whiskey taste. A burning rubber smell also there, just initially. Must try some more of these paradoxes.

Bottled (BB 03/2009)
Almost opaque black (ruby) color, very small head. Strong Islay whisky, oak barrel aroma. Smokey, woody flavor dominated by whisky. Dry palate, alcohol picks up in the finish. Oaky aftertaste. Good as these Paradoxes are (always).

Bottled (thanks omhper!). Pitch black colour, mediumsized off-white/beige head. Aroma is peat, oak, tar and smoke. Flavour is dry wood, peat, very dry, mildly leathery notes as well as smoky. Quite mild Paradox Islay...

(Bottle) Very dark brown colour, almost black, with ruby hints through light. Frothy, pale brown head. Roasted, malty, smokey nose with notes of wood, liquorice, tar, juniper, iodine and heather. Roasted, malty, woody taste with distinct wood and whiskey flavours, liquorice, tar, peat, strong black coffe, cocoa and a generous bitterness in a long, warming finish. A bit harsh. Medium to full body. Not very sweet. Very nice beer.

330ml bottle. Almost black body with a small beige head. Aroma is dominated by peat whisky and vanilla. Flavor is very powerful, lots of whisky. Roasted malt, peat, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, dry fruit, oak, some liquorices and warming alcohol. Looooong finish. Some whisky oak aged beer could be a bit to much, but this suits me a lot. Extremely nice.

(33cl bottle, sampled side-by-side with Speyside 010, Macallan 011, and Glen Grant 003) Small beige head that mostly diminishes atop clear red-black body, nice lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet, peat/scotch, vanilla, chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, chocolate, some roast/coffee, Scotch/peat, light alcohol, soy. Smooth medium-full body with low carbonation and light syrup.

11.2oz bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! Done with comparison to three other Paradox Impys. Pours black, ruby edges, tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is peat, smoke, chocolate, coffee, cabbage, alcohol. Flavor similar, with canilla, strong alcohol, earthy presence.

This dark brown ale poured with a decent tan head and a sweet smoked malt aroma. This is a very nice stout that is laced with whiskey and smoked peat flavors in combination with the chocolate stout flavors. Very complex and quite satisfying.
