Commercial Description:
Paradox Isle of Arran = Stout Aged in Isle of Arran Whisky Barrels - This Imperial stout has been matured in specially selected Islay Malt Whisky Casks. Totally fresh bottle: A faint nose of vanilla, whiskey, chocolate and a bit of metallic funk. Taste is of vanilla, chocolate, metal and a raw note of whiskey, tar and smoke. Body is a bit thin. Finish is a little acidic, bitter and dry. Alcohol comes through as it reaches room temperature. To sum it up: The bitterness is too present, the notes of whiskey are too hay-like and raw, and the other flavors doesn’t quite come out and/or melt together. It probably has to settle down a bit. Just 3 months or so.

Pours dark brown-black with a small beige head. The aroma has some smokey peat notes but you also get vanilla as well as dark fruit. The flavor is more of the same with the vanilla really standing out. Not as much roasted malt as I expected. You also get some oak and toffee characters. reminds me of a very nice scotch. Medium mouthfeel and very drinkable. Tried side-by-side with Smokehead and Springbank and this one stood out as the best.

Maroon color with a thin edge head and scant lacing. Aroma of smoke, roasted malts and caramel, not necessarily in that order. Flavor of peat and earth, burnt espresso, and a dry, bitter finish. Good body. Definitely worth trying, an interesting and complex beer.

[bottle @ RBESG 2009, Grand Tasting] Oaky toasted almond aroma along with some dried fruit. Clear red-black that is almost opaque, under a white ring. Bitter vanilla dark malt flavour with nice, roasty caramel. Oaky and with moderate bitterness. Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours near black with a tan head. Roasted malt in the aroma, with a generous amount of whiskey, and some lighter dark chocolate notes. The flavor has light roasted malts, whiskey sweetness, a hint of peaty smoke, and like notes of chocolate. Very good.

Aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate, smoke, peat, very slight whiskey (this is the irish spelling of the word whiskey). The appearance is like any Imperial stout, dark brown/black, tan head. The flavor is chocolate, whiskey, roasted malts, slight smoke (not as much as I expected). The mouthfeel is medium/thick, not as thick as I might have thought. The finish is where the whiskey pokes through, and leaves a nice warming in the back of the throat. Very good, not as good as I might have expected.

11.2 oz bottle. Poured a thin body of pitch black with an ugly soap bubble beige head. Aroma was far more subdued and therefore loads more pleasurable then the last Paradox I had sampled. Aroma of whiskey, dark fruits, charcoal, dark chocolate syrup, burnt malts and coffee. The body is suprisingly far more fuller then the appearance lead me to believe but sadly it was also far more softer and almost all of the carbonation was gone. The flavor starts off with strong impy stout qualities, roasty and noticeable alcohol, then the whiskey flavors kick in finishing off with more roastiness and burnt malts. Good stuff and worlds better then Islay.

Bottle. Pours deep black with a small tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, ripe fruits and generous amount of smoke. Rich chewey taste, whiskey comes to the surface here, smooth, not overpowering at all. Nice finish
